1) Legislation Update - Hearing on Compulsory Age Changes Next Week - from Lisa Naeger.
(Don't want to sound "preachy" but as a reminder, if contact your legislators it is always good to follow Kerry Messer's advice and be polite! : ) ~ Laura Kostial )
Folks!
The Education Committee needs to hear from folks before next week to ensure that some very intrusive and restrictive legislation doesn't advance any further to impose more cradle to grave mandates on educational freedom. Please ask patriots to download testimonial forms and fax to the Education Committee to stop the legislation outlined in the following link.
Thanks for your consideration.

4) Bolduc House French Colonia History Upcoming History class
Dear Homeschooler,
Attached please find the brochure and registration form for the next French Colonial Missouri History class at the Bolduc House Museum in Ste. Genevieve. Homeschoolers who are at least 12 years old and also in grades 6-12 are invited to register. The class will meet every Friday from 1-3PM for eleven consecutive Fridays. The twelfth session will be May 20,2011 in the evening. Parents and guests will be invited to see the students present their research and projects on that day.
The class costs $25.00 per student which off-sets the materials and printing costs. In addition, each student is expected to contribute 30 volunteer hours to the Museum. If you have questions, please don't hesitate to call 573-883-3105 or email the museum.
You may be interested to learn that two homeschoolers won $50.00 each in our Word Picturing America Contest last Friday. They are fourth grader, Anna Jacobs, and sixth grader, Peter Jacobs. The judges were not given any identifying information so they had no idea that they were selecting siblings. Kathy Jacobs, the winners' mother, went home with a double prize of $100.00. The prizes were funded by the Ste. Genevieve Downtown Renewal Project. The high school winner is Kyle Phillips, a freshman student at Ste. Genevieve High School. His teacher, Ingred McCaskie, also received an award. I am personally thrilled that the home school community is becoming aware of and engaged with our work of preserving and interpreting our region's significant and unique French colonial story.

Kim Perry has asked me to forward along a couple of items from FHE.
First and foremost - our region finally has directors again. Thanks to Kim and David Perry who were willing to step up into leadership. We have been without leaders in our region for two, almost three years. They are also trying to get their membership records squared away ..so see below if you are a member - Kim wants to make sure she has you on her email list.
Also, Kim has forwarded some good information from the FHE lobbyist Kerry Messer about making sure that we personally know our legislators and that they know us. He has some great suggestions below.
I have also been told by many people that in addition to what Kerry is recommending, a great way to stay in contact with your legislators is through Facebook. I am not on Facebook...but more for personal reasons. However, I am told that almost all of the legislators are on Facebook and they love having their constituents signed up on their accounts. I have also been told that Senator Brian Nieves and Representative Scott Dieckhause who lead the Senate and House Education committees both have threads on their accounts about education reform and homeschooling. So you might want to make sure you sign up with them too.
Regarding Senator Nieves, I have gotten emails from several tea party/patriot, republican party leaders, and homeschool leaders who attended an education meeting with the senator last Friday about education reform and homeschooling issues. Supposedly ongoing information about that meeting is on Senator Nieve's Facebookl. It sounds likeboth sides thought it was a great meeting. So you might want to follow that as well.
Don't forget the FHE rally in March!
Thanks again to Kim and David Perry for their willingness to serve the homeschool community.

FROM FHE
From Kerry Messer:
Dear FHE Members and all Missouri Home Educators,
The November election brought many new faces to Jefferson City. We would like for these new legislators to know their homeschooling community supports them and for our families to get to know their new legislators. To assist you, we have created a month-by-month plan for families to follow in an effort to build good relations with their new (and current) representatives and senators.
January: Have your homeschool students write a note of thanks to your family's legislators and include a statement letting them know they can contact your family if they have questions about homeschooling. Make sure your children identify themselves as homeschool students and include your family's contact information. Please be very mindful of spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as this will become your FIRST impression, which you only get to make once.
February: Call your legislators to introduce yourself over the phone and inform them of the FHE Rally on March 8. If you are attending the Rally (or planning another trip to the Capitol in March), make an appointment to meet with them that day. Be sure to mention your January letter.
March: Bring your entire family to the FHE Rally at the Rotunda on March 8, beginning at noon! Our theme this year is "Educating with a Purpose." Plan to arrive well before noon, as parking is difficult. If you arrive before 8:30am, you can meet your Representative and have your child(ren) introduced on the House floor as "Honorary Pages". Schedule a face-to-face meeting with your legislators, as well as tours of the Capitol and Governor's Mansion.
If you are unable to attend the March 8th Rally, plan another day trip to Jefferson City to meet with your legislators. You can be an "Ambassador Family" for home education! See more details about legislative visits at
www.fhe-mo.org.
April: Send your legislators an e-mail, thanking them for meeting with you in March and encouraging them to continue their good work for your district. If you were not able to meet with them before now, simply thank them for supporting your right to home school and for defending that right in the Legislature.
May: Send a thank-you card to your legislators for their service during this legislative session. Call them as necessary if any FHE e-lerts come out. Homemade thank-you cards from younger students are very impressive, while older students may wish to write a note in a store-bought cards.
From Kim Perry
Kim and Dave want you to know a few things:
►Membership: Kim and Dave want to make sure that their membership records are up-to-date so that all members are getting bulletins
>and are on the list for any critical alerts about legislation. If you have joined FHE and >consider yourself a member, they are asking that you shoot them a quick email stating so. Just something simple like "Yes, I am a member of FHE" will do. Please send to:
helps.kper@gmail.com►Message from our lobbyist: "There are bad bills, but in the> current political climate, they are not expected to advance. If any
>credible threats to homeschooling develop in Jefferson City, Families for Home Education will be the first to know,
>and the first to cry "foul", and the first to inform you. If you hear of any calls to action, PLEASE contact your Families for Home Education Representative for clarification, or verification PRIOR to acting."
Brad Haines, FHE State Director and Kerry Messer, FHE Registered Lobbyist

>Kim is wondering if there would be an interest in her setting up one of these to >promote FHE and to answer any questions that homeschoolers might have. If you would be interested in attending something like this, please let her know:
FHE Rally at the Capitol
March 8, 2011 - Noon
Make a difference by joining home educators from across the state of Missouri at FHE's annual Rally at the Capitol.
FHE's Rally allows home educators to:
Hear from and meet our own registered lobbyist and legislators.
Express our appreciation to legislators who are supportive of home education.
Build good will between home educators and their legislators by giving legislators a "face" to put on home education issues.
Ask for continued support of home education.
Present a unified front with the legislature.
Learn about the current status of legislative bills that could affect home education.
Set the stage to be better prepared in case of another legislative "emergency."
(Mark your calendar now for next year's Rally - March 6, 2012)

WHAT IS FHE?
FHE was founded in 1983 to provide a strong defense against assaults to home education in the Missouri legislature. Closely monitoring legislative activity in the state capitol, through their registeredlobbyist, is still one of their most important activities. FHE’s purpose is to protect the inalienable right of the parents of Missouri to teach their own children without state regulation or control.
FHE represents and supports the rights of all home educators in the state and is not affiliated with any religious or political organization, or special interest group. They work to win support for home education among the general public and before lawmakers and public officials.
If you would like to join FHE (highly recommended), please go to:
www.fhe-mo.org and click on “Why Join FHE?”
FHE members enjoy many services, including: (1) at least two FHE Bulletin newsletters a year informing them of legal and other issues that affect home educators in Missouri, (2) FHE seals for high school diplomas for a nominal donation, (3) help with contacts by government officials, (4) representation in Jefferson City by the registered FHE lobbyist. NOTE: Dues are $15 per year.

Volunteer Opportunity
Josh was able to work at clean-up for the tornado damage in Sunset Hills with Service International, the mission arm of St. Louis Family Church. The volunteers were cleaning up trees and debris as well as light demolition.
He found out that they could use more volunteers tomorrow and possibly for the rest of the week. If you are interested in a service opportunity for your child (or yourself!) and he or she is 16 or older, there is an application attached. This form needs to be completely filled out and signed by a parent or guardian if the person is younger than 18.
The location to report to is a parking lot for a community swimming pool in Sunset Hills. There is a stoplight at the corner of Lindbergh and West Watson Park Road. Turn south on West Watson Park and the parking lot is down about a block on the left. You should see some Service International vehicles. Most people have colored tee shirts with the Service International logo. If shirts are still available, they will provide one for each volunteer. Turn in your application and ask there for instructions about where to serve.
The hours are 10:00 a.m. and run until around 5:00 p.m. Please remember to wear work clothes because you are doing cleanup; boots, if possible; and have work gloves if you like to wear them. Lunch was provided for the volunteers today. I think you can assume that it will be all week.

1) Oil Painting With Trina Stephens - Classes Start Friday the 14th - from Laura Kostial
The next series of painting classes begins next week. Tuesday we will be doing a waterfall and Wednesday a garden scene. In case you missed it when I taught it in the adult class, I am teaching "Red Lilies" in the advanced children's class and you are welcome to come to that class. On Saturday, January 15 we will be painting a night time scene of a cheerfully lit up house. On Saturday, February 26 we will be painting a beautiful iris.
There are photos of all of these paintings on our website,
www.fbcarnold.org/artsandcrafts. You are always welcome to stop by the art room and see the paintings "in person". You'll get a better idea of what the painting looks like as these photos don't fully represent the paintings in most cases!

3) Excellence Writing Classes by Sade Tagbo
Hello All:
I hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday so far. It has been very rewarding watching our current students grow with leaps and bounds in their writing. Our fiction writing classes will continue through the winter semester, so there are no open spots there, but we do have spots available in the Excellence in Writing classes starting in January.
The goal of these classes is to help students to build a solid foundation of powerful writing skills using the Institute for Excellence in Writing curriculum. The IEW curriculum was created by Andrew Pudewa and it reduces writing to simple building blocks that empower young writers to become proficient written language where they may have struggled previously. Learning from pre-written models of good writing, students experience and practice the structure and style of quality written work. Students will gain strength in basic writing skills including organization, spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and grammar.
Student Writing Intensive Level A – for 3rd to 5th grade (Mondays 10AM – 11AM)
Student Writing Intensive Level B – for 6th to 8th grade (Mondays 11.15AM – 12.15PM)
Classes are limited to 10 students.
Registration Details:
$120 plus a registration/supply fee of $50. Please mail checks to Sade Tagbo, 2619 Breezy
Point Lane, O’Fallon, MO 63368
You can read more details on each class and register online at

More about Community Conversations:
Using DVD resources, we aim to help college bound teenagers understand, articulate, and defend their Christian worldview. Through thoughtful discussions, friendly debates, and strategic role-playing with trained adults, we prepare students for the challenges that they’re sure to face in religiously and philosophically diverse colleges. These student groups are geared toward Christian teens that have either completed Faith Ascent Base Camp 2010 or are scheduled to attend Faith Ascent Base Camp 2011. However, all Jr. and Sr. high school age students are welcome. Our first session will be the Truth Project.
There is no cost but we do ask that parents and students patronize the fine establishments that generously donated their space to us. For more info call Jeremy at: 314-587-3696 .
NOTE: Parents are welcome to visit. However, to increase the likelihood of open discussions, lively debates, and uninhibited role-playing among the students we respectfully ask that parents keep their visits to a minimum.

4) The Giver at the Edison Theatre from Jill Killion
I'd like to have The Giver performances added to the Homeschool network list of events.
Based on Lois Lowry's award winning novel, The Giver comes to life on stage in a riveting production you won't want your students to miss.
Twelve year old Jonas lives in a perfect world, free of poverty, crime, war, and strife. When the Elders of the Community choose him to be the Receiver of Memory, Jonas starts a journey to uncover the truth of this place he has always called home. The more he learns, the more he realizes the Community has systematically given up much of what gives life its meaning: color, music, truth, and love. At the end of the story, Jonas faces a decision that will define him and, ultimately, set a course toward hope.

1) Education Article from Culture Vigilante on Missouri's Upcoming Legislative Session
Here is the link to the Culture Vigilante article that was discussed on some of the media outlets yesterdays including those of Dana Loesch and Gina Loudon.
http://culturevigilante.wordpress.com/ While I don't think there is need to sound any alarms quite yet - the article is valid in telling us we need to be vigilant and watchful this year since the Republican Caucus has confirmed that education reform will be one of the three main legislative issues this year. I would add one correction, while one of the two bills does mention excluding homeschoolers, it is only a partial exclusion.
This is an other article I received several times this morning from different homeschoolers and thought I would pass it along as well.
http://www.homeeddirectory.com/blog/getting-political. I would add one idea to this as well. We have 59-60 freshmen in the house this year. Most probably don't know the homeschool legislative history. If your representative is one of these new incoming legislators you might want to drop them a card or email and introduce yourself as one of their homeschooling constituents. : )
We have a lot of homeschooling "media moms" watching our homeschooling legislation for us, including Gina Loudon, Dana Loesch, and Tere Scott, along with many other groups including Missouri Education Watch, Culture Vigilante, FHE, and HSLDA. I will forward along any information I receive from them as the session progresses. ~~ Laura

2) Gateway Classic Speech and Debate Tournament Open to All Homeschoolers - from Karen Kersulis
Attention St. Louis area homeschoolers:
You are invited to particate in the "Gateway Classic Speech and Debate Tournament" April 13th through the 16th. This a "Stoa" event being hosted by area homeschoolers. Stoa is a national junior high and senior high school speech and debate league serving the needs of Christian homeschooling families.
The event will be held at First Evangelical-Free Church off of Carmen and Wiedman Road in Manchester, MO. This will be an excellent opportunity for metro area home schoolers to compete in a variety of speech and debate categories. Students aged 12-18 may enter independently and do not need to be part of a local speech and debate team, however, their family will need to become an affiliate of the Stoa league. There will also be a Junior Tournament concurrently held for competitors age 12 and younger -- families with only Junior competitors do not need to become members of Stoa.
Interested families can log on to
www.stoausa.org to learn more about each unique speech event and associated competition rules in order to prepare for competition. Questions regarding this event can be referred to Tournament Director Melanie Wilson at
melaniephd@gmail.com, Tournament Coordinator Karen Kersulis at
kersulis@htc.net, or to Tournament Registrar Camille Cooper at
coop.c86@gmail.com.
In January interested parties will be able to log on to our tournament website at
https://motournament.homeschooldebate.net/ to obtain more specific details.

INFORMATION FOR GRADES 3-6
Students in these grades must choose between the computation (math problems) and the reasoning (word problems) portions of the Math Olympics. The two portions will be given simultaneously, so a child may be registered for only one. Both portions of the Math Olympics will consist of 4 written tests (11 minutes each). A partial, cumulative list of content per grade is: all grades – 4 mathematical processes; 3rd – averaging, addition & subtraction of fractions; 4th – measurement problems, simple equations, multiplication of fractions; 5th – division of fractions, decimals; 6th – percent, perimeter, area. All children will receive a ribbon for participating; however, the five highest scoring children in both portions of the Math Olympics for each grade will receive placement ribbons. INFORMATION FOR GRADES 7-12
The format for grades 7-12 will be substantially different than grades 3-6. Grades 7-8 will be taking the same test, and grades 9-12 will be taking the same test. Both these tests will last for 1.5 hours, and there will be no breaks. The test for grades 7-8 consists of computation problems, decimal and fraction problems, simple geometry problems, and problems from pre-algebra and Algebra I. The test for grades 9-12 consists of (in addition to 7-8 grade content) questions from Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig. math analysis and pre-calculus. Although these tests will be challenging for the youngest grades taking each test, please remember that each child will only be competing with students in their own grade level. All students will receive a ribbon for participating; however, the five highest scoring children per grade will receive placement ribbons. The top ten winners for grades 6-8 are invited to represent homeschoolers at the MEGSL (Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis) math competition on Saturday, March 19, 2011. *Please note the MEGSL competition is for grades 6-8 only. MEGSL is dropping the 9th grade portion of their competition.*The schedule for grades 7-12 is as follows: 9:15 Registration, 9:30 Instructions and Testing, 11:30 Lunch Break, 12:30 Awards. Secondary students may wish to bring reading materials for when they are done with the test (they must stay in the room).
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR ALL GRADES
Parents are requested to stay in the building during testing. Please consider volunteering during the Math Olympics… it takes a lot of combined effort for a successful event. The lunch break allows us time to finish grading the tests & calculate placement scores. Each child/family will need to bring brown-bag lunches & drinks. Please note the time differences. Grades 7-12 must arrive at 9:15 (30 minutes before grades 3-6). If a student grades, he will not be able to take the test. The tests will be given at Southgate Christian Church, 9820 East Watson Road, Crestwood, MO 63126. From Hwy 270, take Highway 44 East/Watson Road exit (Hwy 44 veers to left, continue on Watson Rd. to the right). Take Watson Road for approximately two miles and turn right on Glenwood (at stoplight across from Walgreens & Jack in the Box). If you reach Sappington Road and Crestwood Mall, you’ve gone too far east. After turning right on Glenwood, make an immediate right turn on East Watson. The church is located on the left in just 1/10 of a mile. There is a $5.00 fee per child.
To register, the form below must be mailed by December 31, 2010. Please mail to Marsha Siecinski, 8 Old Colony Lane, St. Louis, MO 63131. 5) Drawing and Painting Classes Offered by Anne Molasky Ibur
Classes are for accomplished high school students as well as adults who would like the opportunity to develop in-depth skills in drawing and oil painting. The small classes provide opportunity for lots of personal instruction. Some of the topics I teach involve composition, color, value, edges and problem solving. Lessons and theory can be applied to various levels of experience. Classes are held in my studio as well as outdoors for painting landscape en plein-air. Private lessons are also available.
Plein-Air is a French expression meaning in the open. Painting outdoors, or en plein-air, developed into the artistic movement of Impressionism in the latter half of the 19th Century. This class is designed for artists who have a desire or a passion for painting from direct observation, both in studio as well as outdoors.
Classes are held once a week in my Richmond Heights Studio. Each class is three hours long, allowing for demonstrations, plenty of hands on time, one on one, as well as group dialogue about the art.
December open studio is right around the corner! Sign up now for studio time during the month of December. The fee is $75 for open studio access from December 3 - 31, 2010. The fee includes glazing and firing, but does not include clay. Previous ceramic experience is necessary, as no instruction is included. Ages 15+. Studio hours are available here.

Brains are exquisitely good at adaptive, real-time interaction with the world. Their neural systems are highly effective at time-critical control problems because they adapt and learn. Brain inspired technologies such as the smart grid - an intelligent electricity infrastructure - could revolutionize the control of large complex infrastructures. Biologically-inspired artificial neural networks (BIANNs), like our nations electric grid, have the potential to provide increased responsiveness to changing power loads and component failures, improve the behavior of the power network and grid reliability, ensuring better stability and security, maximum utilization of renewable energy, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr. Venayagamoorthy talks about the marriage of information-age technologies with neuroscience and their promise to revolutionize how we flip on the lights in this fascinating look at the future of our nations power grid.

My name is Kristin Kerr and I have been teaching private piano lessons in my home for more than 15 years. I am a St. Louis native, married to Tom, and have three daughters 11, 8 and 5. I have an undergraduate major degree in Elementary Education and a minor in music. I also have a Masters degree in Elementary Education from Maryville University. I taught fifth grade in the Parkway School District for eight years prior to staying home with my daughters. Since then I have had piano studios both here and in Montana.
I teach from the Faber Method which introduces a strong foundation in note-reading, theory and technique. I teach 1/2 hour private lessons in my home once a week. My tuition rate is $20 per half hour lesson. 12) Oil Painting with Trina Stephens
As 2010 comes quickly to a close I wanted to let you know that the first set of classes for 2011 is on our website
www.fbcarnold.org/artsandcrafts. More will be added soon.
New for 2011 - - online registration!! Yeah! You can sign up for your class and order a canvas if needed online. No need to make a trip out to save a spot for your child! Hopefully this will make it easier on you busy Moms!! Just click the link beside the appropriate painting to sign up.
Pricing for our classes remains the same; $7 for each 2 hour block of class. If you've been out for a while, you may not know that frequent attendees are rewarded these days. For each 10 two hour blocks you attend you receive one free (spend $70 and get $7 back). Many of the students are taking advantage of this deal.
If you have not already done so, sign up for the FLC newsletter. There is new information and "secret sales" that are only for those who receive the newsletter. There are savings in our fitness programs, art classes and on cafe items. The savings vary with each newsletter. You never know when there will be something there that saves YOU some money! There is a link at the top of our page
www.fbcarnold.org/artsandcrafts. Sign up and you'll receive the online newsletter on the 1st and 15th each month.
Still looking for last minute Christmas gifts? I have a limited supply of the "pocket easels" you've probably seen some of the students using. They are only $8. Their benefit is they are easily portable and light weight. While an easel is not required, many students find it easier to paint with one. I also have "canvas schlepers" (handles that slip on the canvas to make it a little easier to get wet paintings home). These are $5. I only have a few of each, so send me an email if you want one so I save it for you.
I hope each of you has a very Merry Christmas! I also hope to see your child in some classes in 2011. By the way, I do have adult classes for YOU, too!!

and
Good Morning!
As some of you may or may not know St. Charles Community College is starting a home school program this January. We have been working hard putting together classes that we think will be a good start , but we REALLY need the help of the home school community to guide us. Recently our Associate Dean of Continuing Education Tina Sieker and I were on the Dr. Gina radio show to talk about our new home school enrichment program on her home school Wednesday education day this week, and we talked a little bit about an advisory group we are forming. In case you missed it, we want to have a meeting on December 15th at 6:30pm where we will serve dessert and coffee/tea and hope to have your input on what you would like to see us offer here for your families and how we can “customize” our program for your needs!
Please RSVP with me if you would be interested in coming and I can send you directions. We really hope you will come and help us tailor this program for your families and friends!
We are exciting to announce one of the things we are working on is to start a home school choral group next fall lead by our Young People’s Theatre music director and assistant director Sean Andrews.
If you know anyone who you know would like to have notification of upcoming home school classes, events or be invited to join the advisory committee meeting please let me know and I would be happy to send them information.
Thank you,
Amy Fitzwilliam

What a great way to help Family Vision Library, an organization that has so blessed the homeschool and Christian communities. ~~ Laura Kostial

2) St. Charles Community College to Offer Homeschool Classes, Planning Meeting

3) C-Span Digital Video Contest for Youth
What is StudentCam?
C-SPAN's StudentCam is an annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think seriously about issues that affect our communities and our nation. Students are asked to create a short (5-8 minute) video documentary on a topic related to the competition theme listed below.
This Year's StudentCam Theme
“Washington, DC - Through My Lens”
Tell us about an issue, event, or topic that helped you better understand the role of the federal government in your life or community.
Choose a topic, grab a camera, and get started on your documentary today!
Competition Requirements
•The competition is open to all students in grades 6-12.
•Students may compete individually or in teams of up to 3 members.
•All documentaries must contain C-SPAN footage that relates to the chosen topic.
•C-SPAN’s philosophy is to show varying sides of an issue. Winning StudentCam documentaries will also show varying sides of the chosen topic.
•Documentaries must be between 5-8 minutes.
•Entries must contain credits or a work cited list.
•All documentaries must be uploaded and received at C-SPAN by midnight PST on January 20, 2011.
For a complete list of competition rules, go to
http://studentcam.org/ As listed above, one of the competition requirements is that you feature a short amount of C-SPAN footage in your documentary that relates to your chosen topic. There is no time requirement for the amount of C-SPAN programming that you use. However, do not allow the C-SPAN programming to dominate your documentary. Rather, the inclusion of C-SPAN programming should be used to enhance your overall presentation.
To help students meet this requirement, we will upload new videos regularly until the competition deadline on January 20, 2011. Know that you are not bound by the topic areas listed on this page or to only using those clips provided. For suggestions of alternative ways to obtain C-SPAN footage for use in your documentary.

6) CREEPY CRAWLY CONSERVATION: THE VALUE OF INVERTEBRATES
Dec 7th, 2010 (Tue); Time: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Saint Louis Zoo Living World auditorium; Free parking in the North Lot
Featured Speaker: Jennifer Hopwood,Midwest Pollinator Outreach Coordinator, Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation
Though often overlooked or even despised, insects and other animals without backbones are surprisingly essential to our daily lives. While some are harmful, those that spread disease and eat our crops make up a small fraction of the known species; the rest are indispensable members of nearly every ecosystem. Pollinators, such as bees, butterflies, moths, beetles and flies, pollinate many flowering species, including many agricultural crops we rely on for food. Seeds and nuts, also a product of pollination, are an important food source for birds and mammals. But pollinators are not immune to destruction, and this presentation will include an overview of pollinator conservation efforts underway to protect the animals that contribute to human health as well as to the health of entire ecosystems.
Free public seminars highlight conservation science and global conservation issues and efforts supported by the Saint Louis Zoo and other wildlife organizations. Junior Academy members, middle, and high school students are encouraged to attend. Reservations are not required.

• The Pillar Foundation, 15820 Clayton Road, Ellisville, MO 63011
• Cost: $20 per student ($10 for siblings)
• To register or for information: Paula Weems
paulaweems@hotmail.comJoin us for an Economic Thinking Workshop exploring economics, political philosophy, current events, and international issues. What is the proper role of government in a free society? Does government gain its legitimacy from protecting rights? If so, how do we discover legitimate rights claims?
In the ancient city of Novgorod the Great, popular assemblies of freeman were the source of government sovereignty and legitimacy. So it was in cities of the West, before the rise of nation-states. And if governments today in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East do not protect the rights of people living within their borders, does that failure invite popular uprising? Or foreign intervention? (Focus on the Russia topic: 2-4 pm.)
This workshop will appeal to a wide audience of students interested in public policy and world affairs.
More than 5,000 homeschool students and parents have attended FEE and Economic Thinking programs.

2) Fox Theatre Teen Talent Showcase Scholarship Event - Homeschoolers Invited to Participate - DaySpring and Providence to Host Event - from Laura Kostial
As many of you will recall last spring I sent out an email regarding an invitation I had received for homeschoolers to participate in a high school talent show scholarship event being hosted for the high schoolers in the St. Louis community. I am now able to fully respond to your many inquires. I apologize for the delay. I just wanted to be able to respond to everyone at the same time and make sure I had the complete details.
In April I received an invitation from the Fox Peforming Arts Charitable Foundation to extend this opportunity to the homeschoolers in our regions, but they had to find a host. The host organization had to be involved in the fine arts with a C-3 tax designation that served the homeschool community.
Both Providence Fine Arts and DaySpring responded and both met all of the Fox's qualifications to host this event for the homeschool community. They have jointly, and graciously :), offered to host this event for us.
This should be a great opportunity for some very talented homeschooler(s). Below is their invitation to all interested homeschoolers. Thank you Nancy Schaaf and Tere Blackwell for making this possible.
Dear Parents and Home Schooled students,
It is our pleasure to announce the first annual Fox Theater Charitable Foundation Scholarship competition. Each High School in the St. Louis Region has been invited to submit One Entry in the Fox Competition and Home schooled students have been invited to participate in this exciting competition as well. The Fox Organization has asked DaySpring School of the Arts and Providence Fine Arts Center to collaborate to provide this opportunity, as 2 non profit organizations who serve homeschool families.
We will have an event to choose one high school student (or group up to 6) to represent the entire homeschooling community in the Fox Theater competition in May. Scholarships, cash prizes and other awards will be given out the night of the final competition to be held at the Fabulous Fox Theater--$3000 for 1st prize, $2000 for 2nd and $1000 for 3rd prize.
Our homeschool Teen Talent Showcase will have winners in each of the 4 main categories with one over all winner chosen to represent regional home schoolers in the Fox competition. We are working on having a performance opportunity and prizes as well for the winners and runners up in our competition.
The Event as set out by the Fox Foundation:
The homeschool round of auditions will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2011 beginning at 9 am at DeSmet High School Theatre.
Students must be in Grades 9 through 12 during the 2010-2011 academic year, and live in the bistate Metropolitan area.
Each student will be given a 5 minute slot and allowed to enter only once. Entries will be 3-5 minutes in length and may include solo, or groups up to 6 members.
Students may perform any genre in the arts including but not exclusively, music performance, dance, drama, and circus arts. These could include Singer, Actor, Dancer, Musician, Comedian, Magician, Ventriloquist, Juggler, Clown, etc.
Entrants must be available on the posted dates for Preliminary, Semifinal and Final Competitions as well as the rehearsal dates for Finals. (see the application for dates)
Provided will be up to 6 mics, a piano, CD playback, and an accompanist if needed.
Judges will be impartial teaching or performing professionals in their particular fields, who will give comments and choose the winners and the most qualified student to compete with the winners of the other high schools in the area. The judges’ decisions will be final.
Please fill out the following form (found on the home page of
www.dayspringarts.com) and mail to HSTTS, 2608 Metro, Maryland Hgts., MO 63043, no later than February 1, 2011. Please include the entry fees of $20 per solo entry and $35 per group entry. Make checks payable to DaySpring--HSTTS.
We look forward to working with your family in this competition and hope that it will be an excellent experience for all involved.
Sincerely,
Terri Blackwell, Executive Director: Providence Fine Arts Center
Nancy Schaaf, Executive Director: Dayspring School of the Arts

3) Family Vision Library Moving - Article from Tere Scott with the Examiner
In December of this year, the Family Vision Library is changing locations from it's current location in St. Charles to 2020 Parkway Drive in St. Peters, Missouri. The new location will be near Hwy. 70 and Cave Springs Exit 225. The new location will provide 12,400 square feet of building space to better serve the homeschooling and Christian community. To read more about their upcoming move go to Tere's article:

4) Lewis & Clark Discovery Expedition of St. Charles Update - from Cynthia Hoffman
To Educators:
Last month I sent out an announcement from the Discovery Expedition of St. Charles concerning our Educational Initiative in Hermann, Mo. on Friday, December 3rd . We have a few additional activities that will be displayed and demonstrated with Lewis & Clark’s Living History encampment.
What the Students will see & experience will be:
· Lewis & Clark primitive live skills of the Corps of Discovery: Historical Orientation of the Expedition, Medical treatments & techniques of the early 1800’s, Weapons taken on the Expedition, Clothing & Uniforms. Women’s Clothing of the period, Blacksmithing, and Flint & Steel Firestarting.
· Corps of Discovery’s Replica White Pirogue will be on display, which is one of the 3 boats Lewis & Clark took on the expedition.
· Pres. Thomas Jefferson will discuss his vision for the expedition and the importance to Colonial America.
· His Majesty’s British 1st Royal Regiment of Foote will exhibit their period encampment and demonstrate a canon from their Artillery Battery.
Because of the many opportunities of a Living History Experience for the students, please schedule your arrival and time allowance of your visit. Our schedule for the day will begin with the Flag Raising Ceremony at 9:45 am followed by demonstration stations opening at 10:00. Please allow as much time as possible for the students to experience all that is available.
A possible suggestion to enhance this opportunity for students would be a visit by Capt. Lewis to the class on the day prior the students scheduled arrival. Purpose would be to prep the students with an expectation of what they will see and a background to the expedition.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me and let me know your schedule.
Kindest regards,
Jan P. Donelson

9) CHEF SPELLING BEE
CHEF's 23rd Annual Spelling Bee, Tuesday, December 7, 2010, 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at St. Louis County Library's Florissant Valley Branch, 195 New Florissant Road S., Florissant, MO 63031 (about 1 mile north of Highway 270). Cost is $4 per child.
Due to changes in the Scripps enrollment rules, the CHEF spelling bee will enable us to send ONE student from ONE of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's 14 district counties in Missouri and Illinois to go on to the regional spelling bee with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Winners from the Post-Dispatch regionals will then have a chance to compete at the national level. Please find below a list of the counties included in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch region. Any homeschoolers from other counties should investigate the possibility of entering with a homeschool group in their area (Missouri: Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Warren, Washington. Illinois: Clinton, Franklin, Jersey, Madison, Monroe County, St. Clair.)
Any student, grades 1 through 8, can enter! For our CHEF bee, there are no age restrictions. However, the Scripps National Spelling Bee (and thus, the Post Dispatch Bee) is only open to students who have not reached their 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2010 and who have not passed beyond eighth grade on or before February 1, 2011.
Parents and children may work together to study for this event, improving vocabulary, memory, and etymology (the study of word origins). Older students will find this to be an advantage as they further their studies in any field.
We want everyone to enjoy his or her time at the CHEF spelling bee! To this effect, we have some activities planned until noon for the younger students and/or students' siblings. A movie will be played in an adjacent room for parents to take their little ones to view, and we will have crafts for them to do with a responsible older homeschooler. Please note that we are not allowed to bring food into these rooms, but bottles of water are acceptable.
Each CHEF Spelling Bee winner will receive a ribbon, awarded the day of the bee. At the end of the bee, we will hold a written spell-off to determine the finalist who will go on to the Regional St. Louis Post-Dispatch bee.
This student will have plenty of time to prepare for the written Semi-Finals, which will be held at Maryville University on March 12, 2011. The Oral Finals will then take place, at the same location, on March 19, 2011. The winner of the Oral Finals will advance to the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. as a representative of the St. Louis district. Please note that students may participate in only one Homeschool Spelling Bee for the 2010-2011 season to be eligible for the Post-Dispatch Regionals.
As this is a family event, we are once again asking parents to participate by being a judge or a pronouncer for one grade the day of the CHEF bee. You will be assigned to a grade where you do not have children enrolled. Pronouncers will read the words for each round for one grade, as well as offer any of the permitted aids to students, as per rules, such as using the word in a sentence (sentences will be provided). Judges will determine the correctness of the student's spelling and highlight the winners on a printed list. We will also tape the event for verification in case of misunderstanding. I will email instructions to you prior to the bee. A brief meeting before the start of the bee will clear up any questions you may have, or you may contact Anne Belley directly. Thank you!
Our general schedule for December 7:
9:20 Brief meeting with judges and pronouncers in the auditorium
9:30 Spelling bee begins in the auditorium
11:30 Awards
12:00 Spell-off for those winners interested in going on to the Post-Dispatch Bee
9:30-12:00 Meeting Room 2 is available for younger children's activities (see above)
Three types of enrollment are possible: online with payment through PayPal, email with check mailed in, all via USPS mail.
1) You may register online and pay using PayPal (see registration form). Just email the form back to me, listing all students participating and whether or not you can help out by being a judge or a pronouncer. We do need parent participation. Please note that you will not be working in your own child's grade, and that a pronouncer's guide will be provided with sample sentences. Send money through PayPal under services/other to
usbelleys@hotmail.com. Please include an extra $0.50 to cover my PayPal fees for receiving funds. I will acknowledge receipt of the fees and then email you the spelling list for your child's grade, as well as the rules for the spelling bee. Thank you!

5) Correction to SHARE Spelling Bee for Illinois Homeschoolers - from Cathy Mullins
There has been some questions about who is eligible to enter the SHARE Spelling Bee and I apologize that my email about it was unclear.
I had said: "The SHARE Spelling Bee is open to all homeschoolers, grades 1-8, who live in the state of Missouri." This is true, but it is also open to all homeschoolers, grades 1-8, who live on the Illinois side! The catch is that whoever wins the spelling bee can only move on to the next level IF they reside in the 14 counties where the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is delivered. The SLPD is a sponsor of the bee and that is why there is that ruling. So if you live in Ilinois and you win the SHARE Spelling Bee, you will be declared the winner and get the award; however, the runner-up (assuming they live in one of those 14 counties) will be moving on to the next level of competition. Sorry, not our rules but those of the Scripps National Spelling Bee folks.
If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Herman at
cnwtrain@yahoo.com and if you want more info on the Spelling Bee, see the SHARE website at
www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share. Click on "SHARE Events--open to all" or on the calendar date of January 8, 2011.
Thanks so much!

Our club is affiliated with AAU Wrestling in the Ozark Region and MO-USA Wrestling. All coaches and wrestlers have memberships to both of these great organizations and wrestlers are encouraged to compete at regular tournaments throughout the season.
While we have (and we welcome) kids from all over the greater St. Louis area, we primarily serve the Kirkwood, Webster Groves, and Brentwood School Districts. In addition, we have many home school kids and kids active in private schools that are part of our club. Mid-County Wrestling Club hosts regular practices at Kirkwood High School.
If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Herman at cnwtrain@yahoo.com and if you want more info on the Spelling Bee, see the SHARE website at www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share. Click on "SHARE Events--open to all" or on the calendar date of January 8, 2011.
Thanks so much!

Mid-County Wrestling Club was established in 2008 to provide the youth of the Mid-St. Louis County area a place to learn about the sport of wrestling, make new friends, develop positive life skills, compete at a competitive level, and improve their chance of being very successful at the high school level.
We encourage our student athletes to support the high school programs in the school district they live and we will attempt to do so as a club as well.

www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share in two places:
a) On the Public Page: Click on SHARE EVENTS-Open to all and you will see the Spelling Bee listed. It's all in a pdf form. (may take awhile on dial-up..it's a 10 page document)
b) On the Calendar: Click on January 8 and the pdf file should open (make take awhile on dial-up)
The SHARE Spelling Bee is open to all homeschoolers, grades 1-8, who live in the state of Missouri. However, should a student win the SHARE Spelling Bee and not live permanently for the entire school year in one of the 14 counties where the Post-Dispatch is delivered (they are our sponsor), he/she would not be eligible to proceed to the next level of competition (see Eligibility rule #2).
S.H.A.R.E. 2011 Spelling Bee Announcement
When: January 8, 2010, Saturday
Where: Bayless Baptist Church, 8512 Morganford Road, St. Louis, MO 63116
Who: Due to changes in the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules, the S.H.A.R.E. Spelling Bee is permitted to advance only ONE student to the St. Louis Post Dispatch Spelling Bee. The 14 eligible counties are: Missouri: Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Warren, Washington. Illinois: Clinton, Franklin, Jersey, Madison, Monroe County, Saint Clair. According to the Post Dispatch and Scripps, you must be a permanent resident/homeschooler of these 14 counties during the 2010-2011 school year. Residency will be verified. We encourage all homeschoolers from other counties who wish to advance past the local level to consider entering an official spelling bee in their area. If you are unable find one and are not interested in advancing to the next level, you are welcome to enter the S.H.A.R.E. Spelling Bee.
Why: Spelling bees are beneficial for students in many ways. Preparation for the spelling bee teaches students how to establish and achieve the goals of increasing vocabulary through memorization and word usage, and demonstrating this knowledge in a public setting. Other benefits include building confidence through public speaking experience, developing good sportsmanship in a friendly, competitive environment and demonstrating the academic excellence of home school education. Home school students should be encouraged to seek out a challenging opportunity like a spelling bee as part of their education.

4) SHARE St. Louis Area Georgraphy Bee - from Cathy Mullins
- Hide quoted text -
For the past 4 years, SHARE has conducted a Geography Bee in conjunction with the National Geographic Society.
We are doing it again this year and are very excited about it! All the information is below or you can get it from our website,
www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share (click on "SHARE EVENTS - open to all"). This year the National Geographic Society has given us the title of St. Louis Area Home Educators Geography Bee and they are asking that all homeschoolers in the area who want to participate in a geography bee do this one. The lady in the office said that others in outlying areas are welcome to register and conduct their own, but they want any homeschooler who lives at least one hour from St. Louis to participate in this bee. Hopefully, this will work out for everyone. If you have questions, please be sure to let me know. You can reach me at 314-769-7965 or
Ekcjmullins@gmail.com Also, please encourage your children to participate (4th-8th graders only). Last year the questions were not as hard as I had anticipated, and the questions themselves often gave hints to the correct answer. With a little study, I think all the students would do well.
Thanks so much!
Cathy Mullins, SHARE Leader

The sponsor is the local chapter of a large, well established charitable nonprofit. The local website is
www.stlouisthecrusader.org. The parent is at
www.osmth.org. The parent has been accepted as a NGO at the United Nations. The three foundation concepts for the group are charity, chivalry, and Christianity. Local charitable efforts include service at the Ronald McDonald houses and veterans' events at Jefferson Barracks. Internationally a focus is peacebuilding and interfaith dialogue with a special interest in the Holy Land. Senior church leaders from several denominations are included in the membership.
Entries will be blind judged. Award results were be provided back to the submitting party, which in most cases (not all cases, probably, since home schoolers can enter) will be the teacher. We are not planning an award's ceremony. After judging is complete, entries will be discarded. We expect to retain teacher contact information to facilitate notice for future writing contests.
Future contests will also have a Holy Land focus.
Application procedures are simple. One copy of the work with contact information on a separate piece of paper. A teacher may provide their own contact information for multiple entries so in that case we would need only the student name and grade but no other identifying information.
This year the topic is intentionally general to provide teachers greater latitude. The time frame is not limited to current events or a religious theme although those would also be welcome.

11) Bolduc House Museum Colonial Days Update
Dear Homeschooler,
It looks as though the weather will be glorious on Saturday, October 9th, for the Colonial History Day for homeschoolers.
I've heard from many homeschooling families who have mentioned that they are aware of families who plan to be here besides those who have actually signed up. Please encourage anyone who wants to take one of the optional classes: reed flute making, early American technology, or doll making to let us know how many participants will be coming so we can make sure to have enough supplies. Our teachers are coming from several hundred miles away so we really need to hear from everyone who intends to take one of the classes.
The horses and the people mover wagon will arrive at noon to give plenty of time for everyone to have rides, take turns driving the horses, and take pictures. In addition to the buffalo hide tanning demonstration, and other craft demonstrations, the Ste. Genevieve Militia (a re-enactment group) will teach you how to do their military drills using wooden weapons. A significant collection of Thomas Hart Benton art as well as pieces by other members of the Ste. Genevieve Art Colony will be on display throughout the town over the weekend besides the various Bolduc House activities on the schedule. It will be a great day.
Registration starts at 8:30 AM. Bring lunch or plan to buy it at one of the local restaurants. We'll have water, iced tea, and coffee available here.
Rain or shine we have a whole day of historic fun planned for your family. I'm attaching the schedule as it stands today- but we will be adjusting it during the week. The final schedule will be available at registration on Saturday.

We will be taking a "Love Offering" for Sally to cover her travel & lodging expenses and say "thank you" for going out of her way to speak with our groups. I would love it if we are able to give her a nice donation and show Sally how much we appreciate her.
I will be in contact with Sally finalizing plans and making arrangements and pass any information along information I have to each of you. Please let every mom you know, whether she home schools or not, that Sally is coming. I'd love to pack the auditorium for her. (Dad's may come too) She will be speaking on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and our Mission of Motherhood.
I have been hoping for 6 years to get Sally to come speak and God has finally answered my prayers and given me the prayer partners and cheerleaders to make this a reality. Thank you all so much for your help and encouragement. I look forward to seeing each of you on October 7th.

13) St. Louis Scottish Games
St. Louis Scottish Games at Forest Park near the Tennis Courts Friday, October 1st
My name is Bob Quinn I administer the Mid America High School Bowling League, We have approx. 32 schools currently participating in our league making up around 90 teams, and is the largest in the country.
We would like to see if there might be an interest in home schoolers from the St. Louis area to participate in our league as a team or teams in one of our current conferences or if the interest is there to start your own conference last year we gave away over $6000 in scholarships at the local level and over $10,000 at the state level.
So if you think this might be something the home schoolers of the St. Louis area might be interested in, we would love give more information to the parents and kids to see if there is something we can do together.
Did you miss soccer signups for the year? Is your child interested in soccer, but you just dread the intensity of committing to all those games and fierce competition? Do you want your child to take in some PE in a fun, encouraging atmosphere where learning skills and getting exercise is enjoyable?
As a homeschooler, academics is often stressed and taught along with life skills. Quite often, in the shuffle of learning, many homeschooling parents find days after days coming to an end with the physical education of their children overlooked. If this sounds familiar, or if your child is enrolled in a preschool or school who is looking for a program to enhance PE classes, Soccer Shots has a lot to offer you.
Soccer Shots is new to the St. Louis area. It is similar to programs like the Gym Bus (a gymnastic program that comes directly to area preschools and/or birthday parties to offer gymnastic instruction from qualified teachers on site). Soccer Shots does the same kind of thing. They go directly to preschools or schools in the area offering half-hour lessons of soccer. They can also come directly to your homeschool group or co-op. In addition to this, Soccer Shots is offering a few after-school or during-the-day classes at local churches or parks.
With Soccer Shots, soccer is presented and instructed in a fun manner. There is no fighting with parents-referees or intense tournaments. It's a fun and encouraging learning environment where your 3-8 year old will come away wanting to come back for more lessons.
Currently, Soccer Shots is teaching half-hour lessons in the St. Charles area and is looking to add locations, days and times to their schedule. The owner and instructor is Jamie Cody. He has played soccer since the age of 5 and even played on a collegiate team. So, he knows his sport. But, as a parent of three, he also knows the needs of children. He recently left a career in the science/research field where he helped to create flavoring that goes on dog food. While he performed his job as a scientist with excellence, upon meeting Jamie you will realize that his skills are much better served in the arena of children and soccer as you will no doubt find him easy to talk to, encouraging, enthusiastic and upbeat in his approach to teaching your child soccer skills.
If you are interested in a group lesson on your own or in starting a weekly soccer lesson through your child's preschool, school or homeschool co-op group, visit Soccershots.org

First, a little bit about my background. I have known Lisa Kelpe, who is forwarding this message to you on my behalf, since I was in grade school. Our families attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Eureka and throughout the years we became close family friends. I am a St. Louis native, married to Tom, and have three daughters 11, 8 and 5. I have an undergraduate major degree in Elementary Education and a minor in music. I also have a Masters degree in Elementary Education from Maryville University. I taught fifth grade in the Parkway School District for 8 years prior to staying home with my daughters. Since then I have had piano studios both here and in Montana.
I teach from the Faber Method which introduces a strong foundation in note-reading, theory and technique. I teach 1/2 hour private lessons in my home once a week. My tuition rate is $20 per half hour lesson. In addition, the students perform in a yearly spring recital where they can share with family and friends all the progress they have made during the school year. I accept students ranging from beginners to intermediate; however, the youngest student I will accept must be six years old.
National Park Service Rangers will present a morning of interactive activities for children ages 5-18. Activities will focus on the importance of voting in a Constitutional democracy. Topics will include the significance of one vote, Constitutional Amendments 24 & 26, and a mock historic voter registration and election activity. Participants will make a special button for newly naturalized citizens of the United States.
Watch the members of the Ste. Genevieve Militia re-enact how the French Colonials would have tanned a buffalo hide Touch, smell, and taste what grows in the 18th Century kitchen garden.
