We would like to invite you to basketball/dodgeball sessions at the Sullivan City Hall Gym beginning Tuesday January 13. Sessions will be from 4-6 pm each Tuesday thereafter thru the month of February and possibly March if there is interest.

All school age children are welcome. We expect to make provisions that will include everyone. If your child does not want to participate, he/she is still welcome to come watch and visit and/or make new friends.

The cost of the gym rent is $10 per hour, so if everyone can bring $1 when they come we should have no trouble covering the cost. Please do not let the inability to bring money stop you from coming, all are welcome.

Parents are encouraged to come and participate if interested. We have found these activities to be very encouraging and refreshing especially when parents are involved.

Please bring any equipment you feel necessary for your child. Extra basketballs and dodgeballs are always welcome.

If you have any questions, reply to this email or call 573-927-7040.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you there!

3) Piano Lessons - Forwarded on from Cathy Mullins

Hi! My name is Maggie Balassi. I'm a home school graduate who is offering lessons for beginning piano students at any age. I received 8 years of classical instruction from John Gross and am currently studying jazz piano with Carolbeth True of Webster U. I have a minor in music from Maryville U. where I am receiving my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I can come to your home or you can come to mine (55 South, Meramec Bottom Rd. exit). The charge for a single lesson in your home is $22 for a half hour, and a discount of $18 per half hour is given to teach more than one student from a family (I have 5 musicians in my family, so I am very familiar with the multiple student situation!). The charge is $16 for a 30 minute lesson in my home and $14 each for multiple student families. Please call or e-mail me for available times at 314-497-0970 or

4) Worldview Academy at Wesleyan - passed on from Cathy Mullins and Paula Weems

I want to pass along info regarding an opportunity upcoming this summer with Worldview Academy and Oklahoma Wesleyan University. Clayton has attended Worldview Academy for two years, and truly loves it!

He recommends it as a challenging, fun, educational experience to help form a greater understanding of the Christian worldview.

In checking out this year's Worldview Academy, I see that it's the same week at NCFCA National Tournament. I know that will affect some of you...

For others, however, I'd like to recommend this camp.

If you go to the following website, you will find more about Worldview Academy. You will also see, in the bottom left corner, a link to Free College Credit 2009. This will give you info about the Worldview Academy training on the Oklahoma Wesleyan University campus, and how to get free college credit thru them for the week there.

http://www.worldview.org/

Although many of you do not have high school juniors and/or seniors, I thought you might like to take a look to see if there are those you know who might really enjoy this opportunity.

Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Paula Weems

9) Girl's High School Soccer Team in West County Looking for Players - from Holly Durnal

It is time to begin thinking about the spring season for the High School Girls Soccer Team. We are looking for players 8th grade or older. If anyone is interested please contact me.

We are also trying to get things arranged for the season. If anyone

can help with any of the following please let me know:

1. We need a place to practice that is inexpensive and central. Central

meaning around 270 and 40 or 44. We have found Budar Park at 44 & 144 to

be the cheapest in the past at $18 for a 2 hour time block.

2. I have a DVD training program that I would like to start with the girls

at the beginning of January. This needs an indoor space, largest enough

for say 30-40 people to do stretching, and a TV/DVD we can use. Then some

outdoor space where we can practice what we just watched.

3. I also need some coaching help. With a 20 month old and a 5 month old in tow I need all the help I can get. You do not need to know a lot about

soccer, just be willing to come and run around with the girls.

We already have some games on the schedule. If you go to the website listed at the end of this e-mail you will find a link for our soccer page. Click to enlarge the calendar and you can flip through the months. We have games in March, April and May.

If you have any questions just contact me. If you know others that are

interested please pass on the message.

Thanks, Holly Durnal

11) The Sorcerer's Apprentice Young People's Concert - Tickets Available due to SHARE Group Cancellations - from Cathy Mullins and Kerrie Tate.

We've had some had some last-minute cancellations, and now have plenty of seats available for the The Sorcerer's Apprentice Young People's Concert on January 20 at 11:00 am. We have prime seats in the Grand Tier Box section for only $4 per person (Lap-sitters are free). The concert is part of the St. Louis Symphony's popular Powell Hall Educational Concert Series. If anyone from your group is interested in attending the concert with the SHARE, they can contact me and I will hold them a spot (Kerrie Tate at kertate@aol.com or 314-791-0000. Email is best!). Some of you have wanted to attend past concerts with the SHARE group, but we are usually sold out! For details, see the POWELL HALL EDUCATIONAL CONCERT INFORMATION section below. It should answer any questions new concert-goers might have, and is a good review for veterans. The concert will be conducted by the new Youth Symphony conductor, Ward Stare. Here is how Conductor Stare describes the concert on the symphony website....

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice

, which many people know from the classic Disney cartoon, Fantasia, is actually a musical interpretation of a poem by the German poet Goethe. The composer Paul Dukas takes the poem and employs a number of different instruments to represent the vast array of characters in The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Instrument families not only serve as different characters, but also set the mood and tone. Discover how music may depict scenes that at one moment may be comic, and at the next moment menacing. Hear how composer John Williams was influenced by Paul Dukas when composing the score to the Harry Potter movies." (Note: I realize that some people don't like the Harry Potter books and movies but thought I should still offer the concert to those families hat might be interested!)

Be sure to check out the helpful Teacher's Guides and other valuable information at the symphony's website. Go to www.slso.org and click on to "Community and Education," or "Teacher's Guides."

Remember, even though the Teacher's Guide's state that the Young People's Concerts are targeted for grades 4 - 7th, ALL grades can (and do!) attend. The age recommendations are only loose guidelines.

Usually, the younger the age recommendation, the more narration and storytelling. Parents are free to choose the most suitable and/or convenient Kinder Konzerts, Young People's Concerts, Young Adult Concerts, and Sunday Family Concerts for their family.

Please email me with any questions, concerns or corrections....or to sign up for one of the spots.

Thanks! Kerrie Tate (kertate@aol.com or 314-791-0000)

POWELL HALL EDUCATIONAL CONCERT INFORMATION

- The Sorcerer's Apprentice Young People's Concert is on Tuesday, January 20, from 11:00am to 12 noon at Powell Symphony Hall.

- There are NO individual tickets for the Educational Concerts. I have one master ticket for all of us and we are seated together as a group.

- Powell Symphony Hall is located one block north of The Fox Theatre, at the corner of Delmar and Grand. (Many SHARE members seem to park in the lot behind Third Baptist Church, entering from Sam Sheppard Blvd.) Parking costs $2 - $4 in the lots around Powell Hall on student concert days. Sometimes you can find spots on the street, but must put money in the meter. Attached to this email is the Powell Hall Directions & Parking flyer.

- Meet in the lobby of Powell Hall by NO later than 10:30am. Seating begins PROMPTLY at 10:30am, even though the concert doesn't start until 11:00am. Allow yourself enough time to park and walk to Powell Hall. Look for Cathy and Jesse Mullins (in a wheelchair), at the front of the line that forms against the wall.

- If you are late and we've already been seated, tell the usher you are with the SHARE homeschool group in the Grand Tier Section. Cathy and I will try to run back down and look for latecomers, but we might miss you in the crowd.

- Cost of the Educational Concerts is $4.00 per person (first increase in 25 years!). Both adults and students have to pay. If your child sits on your lap they get in free. If you haven't paid yet, send a check made payable to SHARE to Cathy Mullins, 3675a Montana, St. Louis MO 63116. You can pay us on the day of the concert, but it is very hectic in the lobby area!

- There is no certain dress code at Powell Hall (The regular St. Louis Symphony evening events are when people really dress nicely), but its a good idea for the kids to look better than when they are just playing in the backyard (At a past concert, some of our group came in flip-flops and bathing suits...maybe NOT the best choice? At least they had their cover-ups!).

- Babies, toddlers and preschoolers are allowed to attend the Educational Concerts, but will be asked to leave by an usher if they are disruptive. You may have to wait with your younger child/children in the coat room behind the Grand Tier Section. No running around allowed, and no strollers allowed (A lot of parents bring small QUIET toys, crayons & notepads, etc. to keep younger ones occupied as they're waiting or listening to the concert).

- You can drop off your (older) children to attend the concert with the SHARE group. Let me know if you are planning to do this, and I'll send all the details of how to drop off and pick up.

- If something happens and you can't make it on the morning of the concert (or anytime!), PLEASE call my cell phone at 314-791-0000 to let me know! If you call early enough, we can fill your seats and you can get your money back or a credit towards another SHARE event.

- Let me know ahead of time if you need any type of "special needs" seating or assistance.

- Be sure and check your email the morning of the concert for any last-minute updates and changes.

13) Second Annual Post-Secondary Education Fair for Homeschoolers - From Deb Houston

You are invited to attend the Second Annual Post-Secondary Education Fair for home-schooled students. This event will take place Friday, March 6th, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at Woodcrest Chapel, 2201 Nifong, Columbia, MO. This fair is a wonderful opportunity for home schooled students and parents to visit with many different universities, four-year colleges, community colleges, and vocational-technical/trade schools at one time. The 2008 fair included 45 different types and styles of schools, not only from Missouri, but also from states as far away as Wyoming and Tennessee. The schools in attendance will showcase their degree and certification programs and the relaxed environment encourages students to converse with the school representatives. The fair not only gives students and parents information concerning schools and their offerings to our home- schooled students, but it also allows home schooled students to explore the variety of opportunities waiting for them in post-secondary education.

We will again offer the mini-seminar, "Preparing your High School Home-schooled Student for Post-secondary Education," led by Cindy Campbell, a home school mom of three. Mrs. Campbell's seminar was much appreciated by the families that attended last year. She guides and advises home schooling families as they prepare their home-schooled high school student for college. The seminar will address what subjects and records are needed to assist your students with their college preparation. Mrs. Campbell's oldest child is working as an ASL interpreter and will be beginning a master's program this fall to prepare for a career in speech pathology, her middle son is a full-ride-scholarship graduate of Westminster College and is now earning his master's at MU on a full scholarship, and her youngest is currently attending Westminster College and will be transferring to MU this fall.

New this year – Kathy Monnig from Columbia College will present a special seminar just for homeschoolers entitled: "How Big Can Small Be? Going to College Seminar for Homeschoolers".

If you have any questions about this Post-Secondary Education Fair, please contact the sponsors, Ron and Brenda Crowe, home-schooling parents at rcrowe@ktis.net or at their home-based business number 573-642-0659.

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

On this morning, the entire Magic House is closed to the public, and open only to homeschoolers!! Children may spend the entire time exploring or may participate in a special educational program the last half hour (will be announced over the PA).

Price? This month the price has gone up to $5.00 per person, because the new part is finished---hooray!!!! The Magic House is 3 times the size that it was!!!! Under 2 are free...adults must pay(sorry) And no, you cannot use your membership. $2.50 an hour is still quite a good deal for safe fun!!

It's really nice to just let your kids run wild (well, maybe not "wild") without having to worry about them--the building will be full of nothing but wonderful homeschool families (and nice workers).

Sign up via the SHARE website (www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share Click on Calendar and then go to the date, or e-mail Cathy at Ekcjmullins@gmail.com. Or come at the last minute. Cash works or checks made out to SHARE--I am not able to accept a debit or credit card at this time. I will be at the door collecting money. Be sure to use the group entrance that faces the school. Do not use the front door.

Note: We need a minimum of 75 paid admissions to make this work (they need to pay workers to come in for those two hours), so sign up is encouraged. But even if you did not sign up, please come--it's a big house!!!! THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS, NOT JUST S.H.A.R.E. MEMBERS...SO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS.

Other Days to Follow: Feb. 2, March 9

5) Judges Needed for Speech and Debate Tournament - forwarded from Cathy Mullins

I am working, together with another mom, to secure judges for our

upcoming speech & debate tournament on Wed-Fri, February 18-20, 2009.

It will be held at a large Nazarene Church in Ferguson, MO, a facility large

enough to accomodate the many rooms we need to conduct a speech

& debate tournament from the five-state region with which we participate.

Would you be interested to participate as a judge, and to help us locate

other people who might be interested to judge? We would love it

if you can!

This year's debate topics include Pragmatism vs. Idealism for Lincoln-

Douglas debate; and the Team Policy debate topic deals with the

US policy toward India. Both topics should prove quite interesting

for judges, and we provide judge training on site during the days

of competition. There will also be several types of speeches to judge.

We ask for a minimum of a 3 hour time commitment, in order to allow

time for judge training, time to judge a round, and time to fill out

the ballots.

If you think you might be interested to know more, please let us know.

We would love to tell you more about it.

Also, if you know of other sources that we might approach to find

prospective judges, please share with us. We want to find good

judges for our tournament, and know that the input to students

from their judges is a major component of their learning experience.

It is a great resource to help them prepare to become increasingly

effective communicators for Christ.

I appreciate your time to consider this request, and look forward to

seeing you if you are able to serve as a judge. Feel free to pass

along this information to those from your group or church who might

be interested to help in this capacity. Thank you!

Blessings, and Have a Wonderful Christmas,

Paula Weems paulaweems@hotmail.com

3) Air Force Looking for Homeschool Graduates - from Jeannine Floyd

Homeschool Legal Defense Association was recently contacted by Capt.

James D. Couch, a Flight Commander in the 349th United States Air

Force Recruiting Squadron. The 349th Squadron encompasses most of

Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas.

While evaluating approximately 25 to 35 homeschooled students in the

Air Force, Capt. Couch noticed that these students, as a trend, scored

higher on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) then

most other applicants. This impressed Capt. Couch.

At the same time Capt. Couch was concerned that the Air Force was

missing out on a large population of high quality applicants.

Recruiters are able to schedule visits to a public school or attend

college and career fairs. While there is a definite trend in higher

performance among homeschooled students, recruiters have fewer ways of

reaching out to these students and relating the opportunities

available to them for their possible service in the Air Force.

Faced with this dilemma Capt. Couch contacted HSLDA for help. Capt.

Couch is not a recruiter; however, he would be happy to direct any

homeschool student to a qualified United States Air Force recruiter

under his command. If interested you can contact him at both

Rso349@rs.af.mil and james.couch@rs.af.mil.

If you are a homeschool student in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas or

service, we would like to encourage you to contact Capt. Couch and

find out more about how service in the Air Force could benefit both

you and the United States.

Capt. Couch assures us that Air Force recruiters will not badger

desires of perspective applicants and the needs of the United States

Air Force.

1) Home School Day today at American's Incredible Pizza Cancelled

If you were planning to attend the Home School Day today at American's Incredible Pizza, please read below:

Hi, Everybody:

I just wanted to send you an update for 1 December. AIPC made the decision to cancel the Home School Days Special for that day. It was not an easy decision, but due to a death in the family, our educational partner was not going to be able to direct the educational part of the day. We feel it is important for our Home School Days to be professional and organized, and we didn't want to disappoint our customers.

As a way of helping ease the disappointment to those who had made reservations, we are honoring group rates for those who choose to come to our facility as well as a $5.00 game card, on Monday, 1 December.

We are planning on hosting our next Home School Day on 2 February and may keep the same agenda, as we had a good response. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance!

Thank you,

2) Apple Stores Hosting Workshops/Classes - from Lisa Naeger

From the Apple Store flyer -

Field Trip to the Apple Store lets students create a new project on a Mac or showcase existing work. Either way, they're in for an experience they'll never forget.

Our store is their classroom.

We'll turn our store into the ideal computer lab for students who want to create a project. For a full hour, they'll have hands-on access to our Mac computer, the entire iPod family, powerful software suites like iWork '08 and iLife '08, and the expertise of select Trainers and Specialists. Whether your students are interested in math, music, science, or art, we'll show them how easy it is to bring their ideas to life.

Our store is their stage.

The spotlight is on students who have already created amazing projects on a Mac. For a full hour, they'll have everything they need to showcase their talent, including top-of-the-line Mac computers and the iWork and iLife software used by so many schools. We take care of every detail, from personalized invitation for parents, teachers, and friends to a free T-shirt for every student who participates.

Sign up today.

For complete details about the Field Trip program and to sign up your class, visit www.apple.com/retail/youth

When you sign up, you'll need to decide if you want your class to create new projects or showcase existing work. You'll also be asked to name a School Champion, who will be the key contact for the Apple Store. We'll work closely with this person to finalize all the details or your school's event. In appreciation, each School Champion will receive a complimentary one-year membership for One to

One personal training at the Apple Store.

Every Field Trip is open to Mac or PC users.

We hope to see you and your students at the Apple Store soon.

2) 2009 Math Olympics - from Kathy Renaud

Math Olympics will be held Friday, January 23rd, 2009. Registrations are due 12/31/08 and are attached in two formats - Word and a pdf document. If you have any problems opening up one or the other (same information, just two different formats), please let me know.

If you have friends or support groups that you feel may be interested in participating, feel free to pass this form along to them. Please insure they get the complete registration form as it answer many common questions and gives detailed information about the testing and the process. With my schedule, it is difficult for me to answer individual questions that are already addressed in this registration form.

As always, we need a very high percentage (it's usually 60-70% of participating families) of parent volunteers to have a successful Math Olympics. We hope you can join us as a volunteer at this event even if it requires you find alternate care for younger children. Your older children will appreciate your involvement... and so will we!

Again, the registration deadline is 12/31/08. I encourage you to send your forms in immediately instead of waiting until the last minute. The test is scheduled for Friday, January 23, 2009.

We look forward to your family's participation again this year in the Math Olympics. Remember, this event is not just for the superior math student! Let me know if you have any questions. God bless and Happy Thanksgiving.

3) Winter Session Homeschool Tennis Clinics at Creve Coeur Racquet Club - from Kerri Tate

Homeschoolers from all over the area have enjoyed taking part in the Winter Session Homeschool Clinics at Creve Couer Racquet Club. Kristina Burleson, tennis pro and clinic coordinator, is a wonderful teacher, and the clinics are VERY reasonably priced. The clinics were going to stop for the holidays, and then start up again in mid-January, but many of homeschool families asked if they could keep going! Kristina and the other pros decided to have a 5-week "Holiday Session." The clinics are open to anyone, even if you haven't participated before. Whether you are a serious tennis player or just want to have fun, the homeschool clinics at CCRC have something for you. Indoor tennis is a great way to stay fit during the winter weather!

Kristina states: "My focus for this program will be centered around tennis development and skills. We will also dedicate a portion of each lesson to fitness training, nutrition and mental attitude. These classes are to be structured not only to help students to learn the game of tennis but also focus on physical education and aerobic importance. I assure everyone that the clinic structure will allow for enjoyment and learning for all involved. We will have a GREAT TIME, and leave every session a better tennis player and sportsman."

Tennis is a good fit for homeschoolers - you don't need to affiliate with a school because it is a "club" sport. Hopefully, one day we can have a competitive homeschool tennis league in St. Louis!

Check out the details below and contact Kristina at 314-952-6662 to sign up (ASAP!). Feel free to call or email me with any questions. My 13-year-old son, Dave, has been part of the clinics and we can highly recommend them!

Thanks! Kerrie Tate (314-791-0000 or kertate@aol.com)

P.S. Please note that these classes are $12.00 per 90 minute class - not just 60 minutes!

4) Mark Bradshaw Homeschooler and Author of I Am Adopted - Booking Signing and Borders

Mark has a book signing scheduled for Saturday, November 22 at Borders Book Store in Chesterfield Mall. The event is from 1 PM to 4 PM, and we are trying to get the word out to everyone. He REALLY needs to have a good showing for this event.

For the past few weeks, I Am Adopted has been on the Amazon.com hot new releases list for its genre. The book has been positively reviewed by Tapestry Books and more...it is a great Christian resource for adoptive and foster families, and is already being utilized by several Christian family counselors. It would be a fantastic addition to a church library or counseling center, or a wonderful gift if you know of families who are adopting (especially children who are no longer infants).

Thanks again for your support.

2) Homeschool Morning at the Magic House

Just wanted to let you know that I only have 114 signed up for Magic House so far and it is THIS Monday....a far cry from the 500+ last month!!!! But then many could show up unannounced, although I don't think it will be as crowded as last month. Here's the info again. :) Cathy

On this morning, the entire Magic House is closed to the public, and open only to homeschoolers!! Children may spend the entire time exploring or may participate in a special educational program the last half hour (will be announced over the PA).

WHEN? Monday, November 10, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Price? This month again there is a reduced price of only $2.00 per person, under 2 are free...adults must pay(sorry) And no, you cannot use your membership. Normally it is $5.00 a person, but for our October and November dates, they are reducing it to $2.00 per person! Yes, $1.00 an hour is quite a good deal!!

It's really nice to just let your kids run wild (well, maybe not "wild") without having to worry about them--the building will be full of nothing but wonderful homeschool families (and nice workers).

Sign up via the website (www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share) or e-mail Cathy at Ekcjmullins@gmail.com. Or come at the last minute. Cash works or checks made out to SHARE.

Although we almost filled it up last month with over 500 warm bodies!!!!

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS, NOT JUST S.H.A.R.E. MEMBERS...SO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS.

A new wrestling club is beginning in the Webster/Kirkwood are called Mid-County Wrestling Club. One of the board members is a homeschool father of 6. This club will have tournaments on Saturday. as opposed to the usual Sundays. The coordinator/coach is Rob Gion, Jr. His email address is rwg@chapman-sander.com and his work phone number is 314-842-4040. He is the head deacon at Rockhill Baptist Church and will be teaching Christian values and scripture along with wrestling skills. His son placed third in the state last year and we've heard he is a very good coach. If anyone is interested in participating, please contact Rob ASAP. The first practice is Monday, November 10, 6:00 pm at Kirkwood High School in the upstairs wrestling room, with a mandatory parents' meeting during the first part of the practice. There is a yearly fee of $120 (very reasonable for wrestling!) that can be paid in installments. Call or email Rob for more details.

Thanks to Jessica Fischer for sending us the info!

4) WWII HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENT by JOHN NOTGRASS

Families Of Christian Home Educators invite you to join us on November 10

WWII HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENT

On the eve of Veterans Day, November 10, you are invited to attend an historical program presented by John Notgrass about a real WWII soldier. John's grandfather, Wesley Notgrass (1915-2007), joined the United States Army in 1941 and served for four years, one month, and seven days in the United States and Europe during World War II. Based on his grandfather's recollections and wearing his grandfather's uniform, John steps into character to share Wesley's life story in a first-person narrative, from growing up in the 1920s and 30s through his experiences during the war. The presentation is illustrated with photographs from Wesley's collection.

John Notgrass is a 1997 homeschool graduate. He began sharing first-person history programs in 2004. He has given presentations in Idaho, Indiana, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Tennessee. John works as a partner in the Notgrass Company, a homeschool publishing business that helps parents teach the heart, soul, and mind. He is author of the book "Make It Your Ambition". John lives in Middle Tennessee. Admission is free, though a love offering will be taken. All ages are welcome.

John's Website: www.faithfreedomfamily.com

Notgrass Company Website: www.notgrass.com

You are welcome to attend. There is no need for tickets (bring friends if you like); we will be taking a free will offering to help defray Mr Notgrass's travel expenses.

Trinity Lutheran Church is at 600 Water Street, Edwardsville, Illinois, 62025. Mapquest does a fairly decent job of getting you to the church from the I-55, from I-270 it works but I'll give you a more direct route below (although the Mapquest route does take you through Edwardsville's historic St. Louis Street District). We will be in the basement of the church, there should be signs directing you on the Church doors.

>From St. Louis: If you will be coming from downtown or south, get to I55/70 North. I-70 leaves I 55 at Exit 20, stay on I-55 (in otherwords, don't take the exit). Take Exit 23 (Il Highway 143). Go left from the exit (heading west) for 3 1/2 miles. Take a right onto Fillmore (now heading north). You will come to a stop sign after one block, go straight ahead and Water Street will be the second right. Turn right onto Water Street. Water Street is actually the driveway into the church parking lot, you will see the Church sign on Fillmore. If you miss Fillmore from 143 (easy to do because there's no stop light), turn right onto N. Buchanan (there is a stop light on Buchanan and St. Boniface Catholic Church will be on the right hand side of the road). You will come to stop sign after one block. Keep going straight ahead, the second right after the stop sign is Douglas. Turn right onto Douglas, and left onto Fillmore, then right onto Water Street.

If you will be coming from the North, take I-270 East. Cross the river then take exit 12 in Illinois. Take left at the top of the exit ramp, and stay on this road. It starts out as Highway 159, but changes names a few times and ends up being North Buchanan. When you go by St. Boniface Catholic Church on your right, (about 2 1/2 miles) you will come to stop sign. Keep going straight ahead, the second right after the stop sign is Douglas. Turn right onto Douglas, and left onto Fillmore, then right onto Water Street.

If you have other questions, please let us know.

"Into the Woods" is for our older musical theatre students 13 & up, classes are held on Mondays from 5:15-6:45. 3) The Shelby Kennedy Foundation Bible Bee Competition - from Tawnia Jones

The Shelby Kennedy Foundation is preparing to launch the first-of-its-kind, world-class Bible Bee Competition. The competition will begin with Local Contests in communities nationwide on September 12, 2009. The top 100 finalists from each age group will advance to the National Contest in Washington, D.C. to compete on November 5-6, 2009.

Local Bible Bee Contests are an essential part of the National Bible Bee Competition, in that they are used by Bible Bee Headquarters to identify qualified contestants for the National Contest. These Local Contests are planned and hosted by Local Planning Committees-teams of volunteers who have a shared vision and desire to see children and youth grow in their knowledge of God and the Bible. Local Contests may be small or large and may be organized by any motivated group of people, including parents, teachers, church attenders, and/or Christian business persons. A chairman for the Local Planning Committee must be selected; that individual will have the assistance of a Bible Bee Headquarters Event Planner as he or she leads the committee in Local Contest preparation.

Local Bible Bee Contests will be conducted throughout the United States on Saturday, September 12, 2009. Contestants compete with others in their own age group, completing both written and oral tests comprised of Bible Memory and Bible Knowledge questions. Scores are compiled locally and sent to Bible Bee Headquarters. One hundred finalists from each of the three age groups will then advance to the National Contest.

While we do not require LPCs to host a minimum number of contestants, we highly recommend that you strive to have at least five contestants competing in each age group.

Total Prize money of $260,000 to be awarded.

If you are interested in finding out more or organizing a local bee, please see www.biblebee.org or call 1-888-3-bible-b (1-888-324-2532

5) Adopt a Patriot Program - from Kathie Zuroweste

The following are suggestions. The items in italics are requested because they are what makes AAP unique.

· Photo/s of you and yours for your Patriot, perhaps of you fixing a care pkg for them. THEY LOVE PHOTOS.

· Maintain communication with them during their entire deployment…tours vary.

· Send a card to their loved ones: spouse, parents, children. Thanking them for the service of their loved one and supporting 'our' military. Some have chosen not to send these addresses. It is up to them if they do.

· Correspond by mail NOT email. Mail call is the single most important part of their tour.

I have heard this from not only today's military but from my Dad, uncles and every generation of our military.

· Get children and Seniors involved. They are so important to our whole program.

· Forward anyone that you know is depoloyed to adoptapatriot@yahoo.com and we will make sure they are adopted.

· Forward anyone you know who would like to adopt to adoptapatriot@yahoo.com and we will make sure they have someone.

· Subject lines in emails are very important. This is how we route where the correspondence goes. Be specific please.

Let them know WE ALL care and that they are doing an incredible job. Please remember that how you feel about the war and the U.S. involvement in all its' areas are NOT important in the AAP program. Let them know we care for them and support them whatever their rank and position is. Like our son Zach says regarding his position: 'It takes 6500 Navy personel to get my FA-18 off the ship and back on the ship safely. EVERY SINGLE PERSON IS VITAL TO THE MISSION!' It does not matter if you clean the floors, or fly the jets or anything in between. EACH PERSON IS VITAL and we salute EACH person.

Our beginnings with AAP began in a Christian Homeschool Co-op. Even though it has grown so far past that in such a short time, we are proudly a Christian organization. We are blessed to serve Christian service people just as we are blessed to serve all service people, Christian or otherwise. (Each one that has sent us adoption papers or is requesting adoption knows this by the info sent from us.)

We hope to have a website up shortly where both Adoptees and Adoptors are able to go.

Please keep AAP in your prayers,

Kathie

adoptapatriot@yahoo.com

Please let us know of any questions you may have at the AAP address, using the subject

line for main thought.

******************************************************

ADOPTION NOTICE:

With your approval, you are about to be adopted. Please furnish us the following information and include ANYthing else you wish for us to know about you. If you would be kind enough to tell us about yourself and your family we will start YOUR adoption proceedings. We started out as a home school co-op of 9 families, approximately 20 children ranging in age 4-13 from the East Central area of Missouri. In a matter of hours we have grown to include Nursing Homes, Schools, Individuals, Families and so many more.

Our eldest son, Zach 'BUNSEN' is currently serving as an FA-18 pilot aboard the Theodore Roosevelt. One of his closest friends from childhood, Michael, is also serving aboard 'The Teddy' as an AT2 (E-5) Aviation Electronics Technician. We understand there are at least 200 aboard this ship that would greatly appreciate becoming and adoptee. We feel this would be a wonderful way to share our thanks for their great service to our country. We know they will be pleased with you efforts.

We are now very proud to be working with the Army, Marines and Navy. If you know of Servicemen and women wanting to be adopted, please, forward this email to them.

Should you have any questions please contact: adoptapatriot@yahoo.com

The sooner the better.

Thank you,

Kathie Zuroweste for Adopt A Patriot.

6) HSLDA Online Spring Constitutional Law Course Registration

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends:

Registration is now open for the spring semester of Constitutional Law

Online, taught by Michael Farris, Chairman of Home School Legal

Defense Association and Chancellor of Patrick Henry College.

The class begins January 5, 2009, and concludes June 1, 2009. If

you've always wanted to learn more about the history and background of

our legal system, from a biblical perspective, or if you're looking

for a good U.S. government class for your homeschooled students, then

this class is for you!

This 18-week Internet-based course follows Michael Farris' textbook,

"Constitutional Law for Enlightened Citizens," and uses a

computer-based audio CD-ROM to deliver the "classroom" lectures. The

syllabus lists the reading and listening assignments for each week and

offers a flexible schedule for homework. Every two weeks, students can

participate in a live chat-room discussion--hosted by Michael

Farris--to pose their questions and discuss the material. Twice during

the class, students will submit essay exams for grading. A certificate

of participation will be awarded to all students at the end of the

class.

Tuition is $250 for HSLDA members and $275 for non-HSLDA members,

which includes the required textbook and CD-ROM. For more information,

or to register, visit the class website at

http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5793 . Please take a moment to sign

up today!

6) Simply Mathematics Program - South County, Webster and Manchester.

Our Tutoring program is set up so that the student has a certain day (or days) and time each week when s/he meets with the tutor for a 55-minute session. During this time, we follow the school curriculum and work with the student on whatever aspect(s) of math are needed. This may include backtracking to pick up missed topics, and ideally we like to work ahead just a little so students are exposed to the upcoming material too.

Tutoring sessions are set up as either semi-private (2 students with 1 tutor, $40 per session) or private (1 student and 1 tutor, $60 per session). The only other fee with this program is a Registration fee of $40. This fee is only charged the first time a student comes in, so if s/he were to need us a few years down the road after having been here previously, we would not charge the fee again. We do have testing available, but we do not require it to begin sessions. We are open from 1:00 - 8:30 pm on Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 am - 2:30 pm on Saturdays. Sessions may be scheduled during any of these open hours.

Our Math Masters program focuses on giving the student a strong foundation in the basic math facts through daily practice. Each student is tested prior to beginning the program to assess the current skill level. Once we decide where a student will begin, the student is given a packet of work, divided into 7 days worth, to complete each week. Ideally, the work should take about 5-6 minutes a day, so it is not a cumbersome amount of work to add to existing homework.

Math Masters meets on Wednesdays between 3:00 and 7:00 pm, and on Saturdays between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Students typically come in on one day or the other, and stay for about 40-45 minutes. They do not need to come in at the same time each visit, as long as they are within the program's scheduled hours. The program cost is $95 / month, and the testing fee is $65. The Registration fee is not applied when a student takes a test here, so it would be waived.

Students also do other activities while they are here for Math Masters. These are called Critical Thinking Activities, and may consist of tangrams, linkercubes, logic puzzles, etc. Each student keeps a sticker chart, and is given stickers for having no errors on a day's work and for completing activities. When the sticker chart is full, the student gets to choose a small prize (this way we keep the program fun rather than just all math).

I know I have not covered everything, but this is a basic overview of our programs. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have, or to mail you a detailed information packet. Please let me know if I may be of further assistance. Thank you!

7) Homeschool Mornings at the Magic House - from Cathy Mullins

Hello Homeschoolers!

I know that we were swamped at the Magic House last month and were knee-deep in homeschoolers. That was a good thing for some and a bad thing for others. I'm sure it was the price that drew the large crowd, and the price this month is the same--$2.00 per person. So I can't say for sure that the crowd will be smaller, but it might be if those who were uncomfortable stay home. We'll just have to see! In January the price will go up to $5.00 per person as the new parts of the Magic House will be open. Here's the info again and please note that if you marked your calendars for Feb. 9 originally, the date has been changed to Feb. 2 (per Magic House request). Thanks!

Cathy

P.S. Either email me your RSVP (Ekcjmullins@gmail.com) , go to the website CALENDAR (www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share ) and sign up or just come the morning if you are not sure right now.

Homeschool Morning at the Magic House

Other Days to Follow: Jan. 12, Feb. 2, March 9

On this morning, the entire Magic House is closed to the public, and open only to homeschoolers!! Children may spend the entire time exploring or may participate in a special educational program the last half hour (will be announced over the PA).

WHEN?

November 10, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Sign up via the website or Sign up at the meetings or e-mail Cathy at Ekcjmullins@gmail.com. Or come at the last minute. Cash works or checks made out to SHARE.

Although we almost filled it up last month with over 500 warm bodies!!!!

THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS, NOT JUST S.H.A.R.E. MEMBERS...SO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS.

Non-marking/court shoes are required. (If we need to pay extra for cleaning or damages, the price goes up, of course.) All children must be attended by a responsible person at all times. If they don't wish to participate, they will be able to play quietly on the floor in the entry or along the edges of the gym while we dance, but they must stay off the dance floor and they must have someone with them to keep them out of harm's way or from getting into mischief. Hi everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I am sending this prayer request. Sunday

and the rest of his family needs your prayers in this difficult time.

I will email information on funeral arrangements when they become available.

INFORMATION ON DONATION DRIVE FOR A SIDE OF BEEF FOR THE HARTS

In conjunction with Point Prairie 4-H Club, I am so excited to be doing a service project to help the Larry Hart Family. Larry & Kathie Hart are the mom & dad of nine kids. Larry has a melanoma tumor that has spread to his lungs and his brain. Due to his courageous fight against this disease, he isn't able to work. My goal is to raise enough money to put a side of beef in their freezer! No donation is too small!

$3.00 will buy a pound of ground beef!

$5.00 will buy a steak!

$15.00 will buy a roast!

Thank you!!!

PRAYER FOR LARRY AND HIS FAMILY

Heavenly Father,

I praise you as the Maker of Heaven and Earth and as God who is Sovereign over all things, even the most difficult of circumstances. I thank you for sending Jesus Christ, Your Only Begotten Son, to pay the price for our sins and provide a way for our salvation. I thank you and praise you that the Hart family knows Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of their lives and that you have so graciously surrounded them with loving Christian friends who are walking through this with them, and with others who don't know them but who are praying for them. Oh, Lord, this is such a difficult time for them. It seems like every bit of news has been bad news. In less than two months, this cancer has ravaged Larry's body. And now more bad news - the cancer is still growing in his lungs. I pray for that you wrap Your arms around all of them right now as you continue to carry them through this time. I thank You for how You have carried them so far. In these past two months, seeing how You have directed the body of Christ to minister in so many ways for the Harts - how that has strengthened my faith! I pray it has strengthened their faith as well. Lord, help the Hart family now as they make decisions in terms of the direction of treatment for Larry. There are so many alternative therapy routes to choose from and, it seems, there is so little time left to act. I pray that You would point them in the right direction. And, again, I am asking You for a miracle - that You would intercede and heal Larry, if that would be Your will, giving him many more years with his family here on earth. And Lord, may You be glorified through this whole struggle, and may the Hart family and all their friends and extended family look to You for comfort, strength, and encouragement. Finally, Lord, if there are family members or friends who do not know you as Savior and Lord, help them to see who You really are as they watch the faith of a the Harts and the Christians surrounding them.

I pray this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen

That's all for now.

Have a blessed day.

Margaret

3) Arianna String Quartet at Touhill - from Margaret Porch

"The Arianna String Quartet is pleased to invite the St. Louis Area Home

School Community to a special presentation of classical music and talk on

Thursday, October 16th, from 10:30 AM to Noon in the Lee Theater of the

Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri St. Louis

campus. The program is free and no tickets are required. Hailed by the St.

Louis Post-Dispatch for their "outstanding musicianship" the Arianna

Quartet's vibrant and engaging style captivates the imagination and brings

the music to life.

"The members of the Arianna String Quartet are charismatic and engaging

speakers as well as compelling performers, and love to share their unique

behind-the-scenes views on what makes chamber music truly remarkable.

"Drawing upon years of interdisciplinary educational presentations, they

make fascinating connections to other subjects, drawing the audience deeper

into the music, and sharing insights into how quartets play together, solve

problems, and achieve musical excellence. There will be the opportunity for

questions from the audience as well.

"The Arianna String Quartet is pleased to have families and children at this

event. However, please note that the music will require silence for extended

periods of time. If you bring your children, the musicians ask that you be

respectful of the composers, performers, and your fellow audience members,

and be prepared to escort youngsters out of the auditorium should the need

arise.

4) Mark Dicken-Bradshaw Book Signings - from Wendy Dicken-Bradshaw

I have a request for prayers as Mark and our family enter a new realm of work on his book. We pray for continued acceptance and success for the efforts of the adoption ministry (book and web site, and even more as this continues).

Mark has an interview scheduled for Thursday morning at 8:05 AM on KFUO AM radio. We are very excited about this opportunity. Please pray for the right words to come to Mark and to me so that we might speak effectively.

Also, we need some assistance with book signings that we have coming up in the West County and St. Charles county areas. Borders Book Stores, in particular, were not eager to have us for signings, in part because adoption is somewhat of a "niche" market, but also because Mark's book is a Christian Children's book. It would be a huge help to us AND to Christian authors who might be able to book future events with these stores, if we had a good showing at these events. Even if people don't buy a book, I believe their presence in the store would be helpful. Also, this book would be wonderful to donate to a church library or counseling center. Thank you for your support!

4) Sweet Tooth Gala - from Cathy Mullins

Just wanted to send out a final invite to the fundraiser, The Sweet Tooth Gala, for the Hole in the Roof Ministry. Since I am on the board and since the Hamilton Family are homeschoolers and SHARE members, I feel like it is OK to promote it in an e-mail.

Attached is a pdf file of a recent newspaper article in the South Side Journal about Hole in the Roof Ministry. I thought that perhaps if you could read it and see the pictures, it would mean more to you.

Below is the information about the Gala. Please consider coming! Last year our turn-out was so low. It's free to get in! Yes, it's on a school night but that is because we can rent the Shrewsbury Community Center for such a cheaper price than on a week-end night.

I've invested alot of time into making gift baskets (about 25) and I would love to see some of my friends come and bid on them! In many auctions, you will find some things beyond your pocketbook, but not here! We have tried to keep the prices low so that folks in our income brackets can have a chance to bid. Our highest priced item (time at a condo in Lake of the Ozarks) can be bid on by buying tickets. Just a tiny donation could win that!!! However, if money is tight right now, just come to have a nice evening of delicious desserts and wonderful entertainment (Broadway on the Driveway will be performing!) The evening moves along quickly as we have to be cleaned up and out of there by 10 o'clock!

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions, and I hope to see some friendly faces on Tuesday evening. Be sure to bring your sweet tooth!

Thanks and Hugs,

Cathy Mullins

4) Homeschool Days at Fantastic Caverns - fro Kirk Hansen

The days of October 1-14, 2008, will be Home School Days at Fantastic Caverns. During this time, we will offer our school group rates for our educational cave tour to area home school groups regardless of the number attending. These rates are $5.75 for children age 12 and under and $14.50 for age 13 and above. These prices are heavily discounted from our general admission prices of $13.50 for children and $21.50 for age 13 and above.

The all riding tour addresses geology, history, cave life, karst and groundwater. The trip through the cave takes about 55-minutes and is available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily. While we do not require a deposit, we do anticipate high demand for the tour. Be sure to call and let us know when you plan to attend…this will help us to have enough staff scheduled to serve you better.

2008 Summer Discovery - This 90-minute specialty educational experience is available for groups of 20-60 at 10 a.m. & noon daily through November 26, 2008. You must have between 20 & 60 people to qualify for this enhanced learning experience (Home school Co-op group). Visiting student groups will tour the cave and participate in activities at the Outdoor Classroom. Reservations for this special tour are required.

Our goal is to meet the needs of small, home school groups by waiving our group size requirements during this period. We hope this will allow you to incorporate more learning opportunities into your curriculum. This is a time of year when we have available staff to devote to our educational programs and the cave is a Warm 60°, no matter what the outside weather is like.

A free study guide, "Living in Cave Country", and the cave-related magazine Ozark Adventure, is available on our web site at http://www.fantasticcaverns.com/educate.htm to assist your teaching efforts.

If you have questions or would like to make reservations, please contact our office at (417) 833-2010.

5) Junior Achievement Finance Park Day - from Gary Kryvko

Some have asked about the program for older students (ages 13-18) and I am pleased to announce that we have scheduled a JA Finance Park visit day on January 22, 2009. Registration for this learning opportunity is now open and you may reserve space for your student(s) at www.jastl.org (scroll down from the top and you'll see "Homeschoolers" in red). The attached document may also be advertised in any homeschool newsletter or e-mailed to your friends. Thanks for helping us spread the word about our homeschool visit days!

Please note:

We have made changes to the curriculum guide and student workbook. So, you will need new materials this year even if you have the materials from last year.

Training is being held on October 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and is required if you are new to the program.

If you have participated in JA Finance Park in the past you may pick up curriculum materials at the parent training evening, but you do not need to sit through the training session.

There has been a lot of interest about the programs this year, so register early.

Wishing you a great new year of learning ahead!

13) Civic's Opportunity for Missouri Homeschoolers - from Denise Hubbard

Dear homeschoolers,

My husband, Mitch Hubbard, and I are homeschoolers. Mitch and I have seven children and live in Fulton, Missouri. Mitch is running for Secretary of State. Even though Mitch isn't seeking a legislative seat, he will still have the ability to work on our behalf, at least indirectly, by serving as our voice with legislators.

For those who are looking for additional opportunities to provide some hands on civic's lessons to your children or just to log some extra hours, you might want to consider helping out with the Secretary of State's race.

Your prayers and support will be greatly appreciated by Mitch and our family. You can contact us at (573)590-1320, mitchellhubbard@netzero.net , or P.O. Box 126, Fulton, MO 65251. If you would like to learn more about Mitch, you can visit his website at www.mitchhubbard.com .

God Bless,

Denise

Because this is a state-wide race, they can use our support in St. Louis especially, as we have the most voters and area to cover!! - Laura

For some of the smaller groups, I believe Kim Perry's group and perhaps Scott's Air Force Base (whose contact information I do not have at all) he would even do a talk over a lunch), which I thought was a great idea.

He is going to speak to the FOCHE group on the Using the "3 C's of Christian Homeschooling to Eliminate Worry."

I do have some of his other topics that he can speak on and have sent that to those of you who indicated an interest in having him speak to your group. I have to share with you, that I found him extremely animated and entertaining on the telephone last night. He told me he relates to the homeschooling mothers very well - he knows what it is like to "hide in the bathroom for 15 minutes to regain some sanity." Steve and his wife have homeschooled their children, and aside from working with VideoText Interactive, he also runs a board used by vendors and speakers for conferences. I am really looking forward to his talk, as I feel we need to have constant encouragement, and that is something Mark and I cannot do by ourselves for our group.

Let me know if you are interested in having Steve come to speak to a your group, and I'll put you in touch with him.

On another speaker note - I just received word from Russia, that David Hazell is very interested in speaking to the FOCHE group on Febr. 9, 2009. Now, if anyone would like to have him come and speak, please let me know immediately, with your email address, and phone number so that David can contact you directly and speak to you. He would like to have some other opportunities to speak in the St. Louis area, so I told him I would get the word out. He would even speak on a Sunday afternoon! So, as you can see, we've been hopping here, for joy, as God has been very good to our small little group in bringing very big name speakers to us. Steve was literally dropped into my lap one morning after the previous nights' prayer. God definitely works in mysterious ways, and even though Steve might not have been someone I initially thought of, obviously God thinks we need to hear what he has to say,and I'm not arguing.

Please let me know of your interest or support - we really need to get our meeting packed to hear their messages. I know Steve Clark would entertain coming into a business as well, so please pass this on to anyone you know who might be interested. John at Family Vision is on this list, so please don't bombard him --I've included him already.

Blessings on your day,

Kyla Unick

9) 2009 Creating Original Music Program (COMP) Competition and Camp - from Cathy Mullins (received and forwarded at the request of Stephanie Berg)

I am the organizer of the 2009 Creating Original Music Program (COMP), based in the University of Missouri in Columbia. The program provides an excellent and rare opportunity for participants grades K-12 to write original music compositions and potentially have them performed in a festival that will be taking place April 18, 2009. There is also a one-week camp focusing on composition during the summer where students will benefit from the guidance of Mizzou's composition faculty.

I am currently looking for ways to reach out to Missouri's home school communities to spread the word about COMP. If you have any suggestions as to how I could dispense information, either via mailing list or other, it would be an immense help to me.

For more information about COMP, you can check out our website at:

http://music.missouri.edu/COMP/index.html

Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Berg

10) SHARE Spelling Bee - from Cathy Mullins

This year the SHARE Spelling Bee will be on Saturday, Dec. 13th. I will put the details on the website soon. But, first, we can't do it without a lot of helpers. This year I have a new coordinator--Susie Turdo. She has lots of experience and is counting on helpers to make this the best bee we have ever had. She has even arranged with the Post-Dispatch to have not just one winner, but a winner from every county that is represented (and served by the Post Dispatch). This gives a lot more students a good chance to go to the regionals. Having it in December also gives the winners more time to study for the regional event. Susie writes....

....I will need 12 adults to say, "Yes." We'll need 6 minimum to work as judges, spelling masters, and helpers with my two youngest children. The other six will be in case any other volunteers are unable to help.... Let's get the volunteers first, then send out the advertisement with the registration form. We need to be certain there will be an event for the students to attend!

Are you able to think of any adults who are unrelated to children who would participate in this Bee? They must have excellent diction, hearing, and integrity.

If you would like to help out your fellow homeschoolers here (or perhaps a friend or relative would enjoy volunteering--they do not have to be homeschoolers), then please contact Susie at cturdo15@sbcglobal.net as soon as possible. We must have our workers before we can move on. Please do this if at all possible. It's such a worthwhile event. Don't be too scared away with the "excellent diction, hearing and integrity" part...I am sure you qualify. You just can't be related to a participant.

Thanks!

Cathy Mullins

1. Spanish Class Opportunities

Hola!

There are still a few spots left in the SHARE Spanish classes at the Salvation Army on Thursdays.

If you are interested in signing up, contact me ASAP and I will hold a spot for you. To register, send me the names and ages of your children, class choice, and your name and phone number. It would also be helpful to know how much Spanish each child has had, and if they have any learning challenges.

If the Thursday classes are not convenient for you, Eleanore may be able to tutor your child privately or form another class. We have quite a few Spanish 2 & 3 students that are looking for others to share the costs of a class/tutoring session. Let me know if you are interested.

I think you (and the kids!) will love Eleanore Trujillio-Tiroch, our new Spanish teacher. Quite a few of you with older children got to meet her at the Homelink Open House last Thursday. She is in her 30's but is "retiring" from the Hazelwood school district so she can spend more time with her 8 year old son, Cody. She will continue her other part-time jobs as the virtual Spanish teacher for Kaplan and as a tutor/teacher at a parochial school near her home in Florissant. She has taught in the public schools for 13 years after receiving her undergraduate and graduate degrees in both Spanish and education from UMSL. Originally from New Mexico, her mom is Mexican and her dad is German. Eleanore has had many offers for tutoring and teaching jobs - we are so excited that she agreed to teach for us on Thursdays! She has a real passion for teaching Spanish, and her approach will be fun, yet challenging.

See the information section below for more details about the classes. Feel free to call or email me with any questions, concerns or suggestions!.

Adios! Kerrie Tate (kertate@aol.com. 314-791-0000)

SHARE/SALVATION ARMY SPANISH CLASS INFORMATION

- The SHARE Spanish classes will begin on Thursday, September 11, at the Salvation Army Gateway Citadel Building, 824 Union Rd., St. Louis Mo., 63123. The Salvation Army building is also the location of Homeschool P.E. classes (Spanish I for high school students will take place at Homelink from 9:00 - 10:00 am with Eleanore). See the P.E. schedule in blue below.

- Classes will remain the same low price as in past years - $5 per class per student! Payment for the entire semester will be due on the first day of class - September 11. The fall semester will follow the P.E. schedule, but start one week later on September 11. The classes will run for 14 weeks, from September 11 - December 18, with November 27 off for Thanksgiving vacation. The semester price would be $70 ($5 X 14 weeks). We are hoping to offer a sibling discount, but it may not be possible. We will probably be able to do away with a materials/copy fee for the elementary grades if there is no sibling discount...it would add up to about the same savings. Families can pay Eleanore in installments if necessary (We'll let you know about the 2nd semester schedule later this week.

- We may have to charge a small copy/materials fee for the jr. high and high school classes. It will probably be about $5 per semester. Eleanore would also like the jr. high and high school students to meet with her at a Mexican restaurant at least once or twice a semester (should be fun!).

- Eleanore designed much of her own curriculum at Hazelwood, and will be doing the same for us. This will save a lot of money - Spanish curriculum is very pricey. Each child will need to have a binder for their Spanish "handouts." We will have pencils, pens, markers and crayons available but it would be best if students had their own. Older students will be required to have a Spanish-English dictionary - the dictionary will be mandatory for the jr. high students and high school students, but optional for the 10 - 11 year olds. Eleanore has a favorite dictionary that she is looking for in an inexpensive paperback version. We'll be sending out the details later this week.

- We were hoping to work out a "school" deal with Rosetta Stone to offer free downloads of their foreign language software to those enrolled in SHARE foreign language programs. We spent hours talking to their school reps and computer guys! The new versions of Rosetta Stone do not really allow for generic "group" use - everything is customized to the individual student user. That's why they took Rosetta Stone out of libraries, including the St. Charles County Library. They are working on a "group" adapation, but it may not be ready until next year. In the meantime we are talking to Aurolog and other foreign language programs about freebies! Rosetta Stone, Aurolog and others would be a great supplement to our once-a -week instruction, but are pretty pricey to buy as an individual. Stay tuned...

- As usual, we've had a huge response to the 5-7 year old class! Thankfully, Eleanore has a lot of energy and is experienced in teaching large groups of students. Large classes are good for Spanish conversation, games, dances, songs, plays, etc. But - we will probably divide the class into 2 sections for some things - 5 year olds in one group and 6-7 year olds in another. I'll be helping Eleanore, along with other moms that have teaching experience. It would helpful if we know how much your child is reading - if at all. The class is suppose to be for students that are reading, but Eleanore will make it work for non-readers, too.

- Because of space limitations, its best not to have parents and siblings in the classroom (unless you are an "official" helper). We've tried to have an "open" classroom before and it gets chaotic and noisy. If your child is scared to go in without you (like mine always were!), you can get them settled in the beginning and then wait outside the hall or in the fellowship hall. If you have little ones, it is best not to hang out in the hallway. Parents of Spanish students have permission from the Salvation Army to use nursery (next door to Spanish class) with their preschoolers, toddlers and babies. The nursery is not for school age children, and has to be put back in exact order when we are done using it (Thanks to Rachel, Chris and Tracy for organizing and cleaning up last year!)

- If you are signed up for Spanish, and would like to take a P.E. class, there may be a few spots that have opened up. Call Cort at 631-0727 ext. 8 and leave a message, or email Cort at Cort_Hubbard@usc.salvationarmy.org (ASAP!).

: Steve Heitman has been teaching band to homeschooled students for a very long time. He's one of the nicest people I know. If you have a child with a desire to play a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument and you can't afford individual lessons, please take the time to talk to Steve. His group teaching is very reasonable and his kind spirit will enable your child to develop a love for playing his/her instrument.

9) Art Class with Reinbrook Studios Fall 2008

It's that time again to start thinking about what you'd like to enroll your home-schooled children in for the fall of 2008. We will again be offering art classes with the very special teachers from Reinbrook Studios starting Tuesday, September 9th at Life Christian Church in the school building. Classes, as in the past, will begin at 4:00 pm and run until 5:30 pm., and are for grades K through high school. There will be a class for elementary students and one for older students (usually 10 years old and older). This is a 12-week class, with the exception of Thanksgiving week.

Margie and Gretchen drive a long ways in order to offer this class to us in the South County region. Due to the higher cost of fuel, there is a slight increase for class this year of $90.00/student. We will be requiring some type of deposit in order to hold your child's spot in the class, as these classes fill up quickly -- especially the younger class. Any amount of the tuition you prepay will be considered your deposit. Please make your checks out to Reinbrook Studios and send to Kathy Broaddus, 12536 Triple Oaks Dr., St. Louis, MO 63128. The balance will be due when classes begin. (Margie and Gretchen will take payments in installments, if necessary.)

For those of you who are new to Reinbrook Studios, Margie and Gretchen have been teaching home-schooled students art for many years now. Those of you who have had the privilege of having them teach your children art know that they have the gift of drawing out of children artistic ability that many of us parents didn't even realize that our children had! If your children have any bent towards fine art, I would heartily recommend that you give your children the opportunity to try the class out for themselves. The projects that Margie and Gretchen provide for the children are rotated every several years, so that each year there will be something new for your child to do!

Please check out www.reinbrook.com for more information about Reinbrook Studios and also to get the list of supplies that will be needed for the class. (To access this list, click on "Schedules", then click on "Supply List" farther down the page.

We're looking forward to you joining us for another fun year with Reinbrook!
