2) National Geographic Spelling Bee Hosted by SHARE

Dear Homeschoolers,
For the past 5 years, SHARE has conducted a Geography Bee in conjunction with the National Geographic Society.
We are doing it again this year and are very excited about it!  All the information is below or you can get it from our website, www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share (click on "SHARE EVENTS - open to all").  Again the National Geographic Society has given us the title of St. Louis Area Home Educators Geography Bee and they are asking that all homeschoolers in the area who want to participate in a geography bee do this one.  The lady in the office said that others in outlying areas are welcome to register and conduct their own, but they want any homeschooler who lives at least one hour from St. Louis to participate in this bee.   Hopefully, this will work out for everyone.  If you have questions, please be sure to let me know.  You can reach me at 314-769-7965 or Ekcjmullins@gmail.com
Also, please encourage your children to participate (4th-8th graders only).  Last year the questions were not as hard as I had anticipated, and the questions themselves often gave hints to the correct answer.  With a little study, I think all the students would do well.
 Thanks so much!

3) November WCCHE Group Support Night at Pillar Foundation

Mark your calendars now for an evening of encouragement.
Come join us for the November WCCHE Support Night
at Pillar Foundation on Monday,  November 14 at 7 p.m.
Pastor Paul Stolwyk, a home school dad, will present:
Calling the Sculpture From the Stone:
What God Can Accomplish Through Home Schooling Parents
According to Pastor Stolwyk, "Each of our children is a masterpiece waiting to be revealed- like a sculpture hidden in the stone until the artist chisels it out. We will look at what God is offering to your children through you as he calls them to be His image bearers. With the dirty reality of everyday life as our backdrop, and some examples from our own journey, we want to help you not lose sight of what God is really using to call out the sculpture- as you teach math, reading or science at your kitchen table."
Fellowship time will follow the presentation
Children aged 7 years and older are welcome to quietly play board games in the library during the presentation. Adult supervision will be provided.
Newcomers are also invited to attend a pre-event meeting
6:30-7:00 p.m.
Pacing Your Home School Year to Make it Through
This session will offer various scheduling ideas for pacing your year to completion, including how to navigate through the holidays (cheerfully) while home schooling! There will also be suggestions for incorporating Christmas in your December school days. A Question/Answer time will conclude our newcomer meeting.
EVERYONE is welcome for both of these topics; you do NOT have to be a WCCHE member to attend. If you sign up at WCCHE.org , we’ll have a seat for you!

4)   AIMS (Adventures in Medicine and Science) class - How theBody Works: A Study of Human Organs & Systems- Still Has Opening This Tuesday

Kerrie Tate writes....

Hi Everyone!
I’ve been getting lots of calls and emails asking if there is still room in the first AIMS (Adventures in Medicine and Science) class - How theBody Works: A Study of Human Organs & Systems- this Tuesday, November 1 from 9:30 – 11:15 am. The answer is YES! In fact, the public school groups have switched to a different day and we now have the whole auditorium to ourselves! We can bring as many parent chaperones as we want for free (But parents are not required to stay – students can be dropped off or drive themselves).

This “Auditorium Presentation” class is an awesome introduction to all systems of the body and is a perfect supplement to any science or health studies for jr. high or high school (mature 5th and 6th graders count as jr. high).  It is also a good intro to the other AIMS programs. A Saint Louis University physician teaches the anatomy lesson from the stage while exploring a human cadaver with a small 3D camera. The camera images are shown on the 17 –ft. screen and participants watch with 3D glasses (The human cadaver is completely covered and treated very respectfully).

To sign up for this class, go to the Public Page of the SHARE website at www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share/ and click on the “Public Calendar” link on the left sidebar at the bottom. When the calendar appears, go to the November screen and click on the class name on the November 1st box. A pop-up window will appear on the left side of your screen. Fill out the required information and your name will be added to the sign-up list. Since it is so close to November 1st, you can bring your payment on the day of class. Cost is $5 per student.

For more details about this event, go to the “AIMS Program 2011-2012” link on the left sidebar of the SHARE website. Scroll over to the “AIMS PROGRAM IMPORTANT INFORMATION” webpage. Feel free to call or email Kerrie Tate at 314-791-0000 or kertatefieldtrip@aol.com with any questions or concerns.

See below for the schedule of other SHARE-sponsored AIMS classes.

Hope you can join us!   Kerrie

Hi Everyone!

There ARE still openings in this Tuesday’s (November 1st) Young People’s Concert, The Composer is Dead by Lemony Snicket! Many SHARE families saw the concert last Wednesday and can highly recommend it! It was an exciting way to learn about the orchestra and composers, and is not as “dark” as it sounds!  Bobby Norfolk did a great job narrating and acting out the different parts, and illustrations from the award-winning book were projected on the big screen. We hope to have a couple of copies of the book and CD in the SHARE Lending Library very soon.

To sign up, go to the Public Page of the SHARE website at www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share/ and click on the “Public Calendar” link on the left sidebar at the bottom. Go to the November page and click on “Young People’s Concert” on the November 1st box. A pop-up window will appear on the left side of your screen. Fill out the required information and your name will be added to the sign-up list. Since the concert is so soon, you can bring your payment to us at Powell Hall.

The cost is $5 per person and lapsitters are free. The performance begins at 11:00 and lasts about an hour. For more information, go to the “Powell Hall Concerts - NEW” link on the left sidebar of the SHARE website at www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share/.

1) O'Fallon, Illinois Homeschoolers Looking to Start YMCA PE Class for 13 and UP.

The YMCA is willing to do a PE/Fitness class for ages 13 and up on Thursday afternoons from 2-3.  For the first session we would start Nov 3rd and meet the 3rd,  Nov 10, Nov 17 (no class Nov 24th - Thanksgiving) Dec 1, Dec 8 and Dec 15.  He gave me the cost for 8 weeks, (which is $30 per participant and $25 for each additional participant from the same family), and told me the price for 6 sessions would be the cost per session times 6.  So the price for 6 weeks would be $22.50 per participant and $18.75 for each additional participant from the same family. (I figured out that price, so they may round it off).  It is the same price for members or non-members.  The non-members would have to sign a waiver.  If we get the interest, we can continue this throughout the school year.
We need to have 10 people confirmed to have this class, so if you could forward this to anyone you know that might be interested, that would be great.  I know we have 6 with our families, another family with 2 children is interested but I need to confirm with her, so we only need 2-4 more people to make it a go.  It can also be more than 10, so we won't cut it off there. Please let me know about any interest you have.
Thank you!

13) Mizzou New Music Initiative - C.O.M.P. 2012 Competition

Seventh annual Creating Original Music Project (C.O.M.P.)
competition offers prizes, recognition for Missouri student composers
Columbia, MO
– From concert halls to Hollywood movies to TV, video games, commercials and more, every minute of music we hear starts with a composer - and every composer needs a start.
Giving young composers their start is the purpose of the Mizzou New Music Initiative’s Creating Original Music Project (C.O.M.P), an annual statewide competition now in its seventh year that recognizes Missouri students in grades K-12 who compose original music in a variety of styles.
Sponsored by the University of Missouri School of Music; the Department of Learning, Teaching & Curriculum; and the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation, C.O.M.P. in September mailed information to music teachers across the state inviting students to participate in the 2012 competition. The winning composers and their schools will be awarded cash prizes, and the winning compositions will be performed at the Creating Original Music Project's New Music Festival on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Students in grades K-5 may submit compositions in the categories of Vocal Music or Instrumental Music. For grades 6-8, the categories are Fine Art Music or Popular Music; and for grades 9-12, they are Fine Art Music, Popular Music, Jazz, or other styles. All entries must be original music written by the student, and only one entry per student is allowed. Arrangements of previously composed pieces or improvisation based on composed pieces will not be accepted.
Mentors and teachers are encouraged to offer support and critiques, though the submissions must be the students' own original compositions. Music teachers and/or mentors may assist students in notating or recording the pieces, and each student who applies must have the signature and sponsorship of their school's music teacher. Only three submissions per category per school are allowed. It is the responsibility of the school music teacher(s) to decide which three pieces per category will be entered in the contest. The postmark deadline for submission of all compositions is January 2, 2012.

For students looking for additional guidance or feedback on their work, the Mizzou New Music Initiative also offers Composer Connection, a distance-learning program that gives aspiring composers a chance to talk with and receive instruction from a graduate student in composition at MU. Students can e-mail works in progress and ask questions about composing, and receive suggestions and answers directly from the composer on call. The composer on call for the 2011-12 academic year is David Witter, who can be reached by email at composerconnection@missouri.edu.
The Mizzou New Music Initiative brings together a diverse array of programs intended to position the University of Missouri School of Music as a leading center in the areas of composition and new music. The Initiative is the direct result of the generous support of Dr. Jeanne and Mr. Rex Sinquefield and the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation.

2) Penguin Ski Club at Hidden Valley

Back by popular demand:  Penguin Ski Club!
The program is an unbelievable price.  It’s a bargain even if only used twice and makes a fantastic Christmas gift.
For only $99 each person receives a lift ticket, ski or snowboard rental each time they visit (once a week Mon-Thurs), and an individual pass that they will keep with them.  This pass is flexible allowing you to vary your choice of day from week to week (Mon-Thurs).  This pass must be presented at the ticket window with each visit to Hidden Valley so a current lift ticket can be issued to the pass holder.

Joining this club is still less expensive than going to ski without a pass twice.  The same plan would be triple the price without our club.  This is a fundraiser for the Homeschool Japanese Club. We are planning to go to Japan to minister this summer.

Anybody can join, including your friends, neighbors and family who aren’t homeschooling.  But the deadline to join is December 1st at midnight.  Hidden Valley makes no exceptions.
NEW THIS YEAR:  To join the Penguin Ski Club, visit http://www.hiddenvalleyski.com/.  Click “Plan and Buy” along the top.  Click School programs, then under HV Ski and Ride Club click Learn More, then click the box to buy now.  Our user name for the club is “Penguins” with a capital P.  Our password is “homeski” with a lower case h.  You are now in our club site.

Next you will click the blue  “go shopping.”   At the top left there is a box of catagories where you click 11/12 ski passes.  Select the pass you would like.  Most people want the Mon-Thurs option for $99.  You can also select the Friday only option for$149 if you want and add it to the cart and check out.  (This year they are charging us tax on tickets, which is about $7.50.)

During check out you will assign a guest for the pass.  If you were a member last year, type in the name of each person one at a time and see if it is still in the system from last year.  My daughter’s name must have been spelled wrong in their system, so I had to create a new guest.  New members do this by typing in the name and address and birthday, etc.

Once you find the guest, or create a new one, you select the guest and enter the birthday of that guest.  Check out is like most other things on line.  You enter your billing name and address and make payment via Visa, Master Card or Discover.

To learn more about Hidden Valley, you may visit the website at  http://www.hiddenvalleyski.com/   If you still have questions, please email me at K3instl@att.netor call 636-273-9565.  If needed, I will contact Hidden Valley for you.  The season is crazy busy, and they insist we have one contact person for all our questions.

3) Homeschool Morning at the Magic House Schedule

EXCITING NEWS: For all the dates, the price will only be
   $3.00 per person!!!!!
Dear Homeschoolers,
After some conversation with the nice folks at the Magic House, we have convinced them to give us the wonderful $3.00 price for ALL of our Magic House Mornings this school year.  We have promised them that “if they make it affordable, we will come”.  Please, please spread the word about this great deal and make plans to attend one or all of the Homeschool Mornings at the Magic House.  It’s such a wonderful experience to have that entire venue full of like-minded families.  You can let your children have a lot of freedom knowing that the building is closed to the public and is open to only homeschool families and sweet Magic House employees.  My goal is to fill the Magic House with hundreds of  homeschoolers and show our appreciation to the Administrative Staff of the Magic House for their generosity towards us!
Please note the following:
*Price:  $3.00 per person (adults included)
*Children under the age of 1 are free.
*You may NOT use any membership pass or discount coupons as this is already a special price.

* THIS EVENT IS OPEN TO ALL HOMESCHOOLERS, NOT JUST S.H.A.R.E. MEMBERS...SO INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!   Please feel free to copy this and forward to them.  It is important that we have over 400 participants or the price will be raised.

4) Touhill Performing Arts Center Arts @ Play Series

Hello! This season at the Touhill Performing Arts Center, we are pleased to present a new series, Arts @ Play. This series will focus on bringing the arts to a new generation. There are three different performances to choose from, Paper Slip Theatre on September 23, MADCO Exercise Imagination on January 20, and Muny 4U on April 13. All performances are at 10 AM and 12:30 PM. Tickets are $5 per participant. The attached flyer provides more information on these shows. As a special thank you for your continued support, I can offer you the first performance, Paper Slip Theatre, completely free of charge. If you are interested in attending, I would need the number of participants that you are planning to bring and which performance time you will be attending.  Again, while the second two performances, MADCO Exercise Imagination and Muny 4U are $5 a ticket, the Paper Slip Theatre on September 23 is free of charge!  Thank you and please contact me if you have any questions! Emily HorsfordAssistant Ticket Office ManagerTouhill Performing Arts Center314.516.4940horsforde@umsl.edu interactive Learning for Young Audiences
Many young people think of “culture” as a heaping plate of vegetables – suppose to be good for them, yet not all that enjoyable.
While culture and arts are widely recognized as part of a balanced educational diet, it’s often received by kids as the lonely broccoli that just doesn’t go down so easy. Here’s where the Touhill’s new youth engagement activity comes in. Arts@ Play serves up a healthy plate of culture – disguised as dessert.
Arts@Play is a collaboration of Touhill staff and three of St. Louis’ most respected presenters and artists. Ed Reggi’s Instant Paper Slip Theatre, MADCO and The Muny created original work especially for Arts@Play, each a hybrid of interactivity and performance.
The goal: Give young people the opportunity to experience the performing arts in an entertaining, comfortable, fun setting.
Participants can expect anything but a “kick-the-seat-in-front-of-you-and-count-ceiling-tiles” experience. Those who are so inclined can join artists on stage, give story suggestions, or incorporate their own favorite dance moves into the group’s choreography. Those who prefer to take it all in will enjoy what they see!
Arts@Play delivers so much fun, young audiences don’t realize they are being “fed” a healthy diet of fine arts.

Ed REggi’s Instant PaPer slIP theatre
FRidAY sePteMBer 23
Using audience suggestions, Ed Reggi and his company of actors, create a theatrical play on the spot in front
of a live audience. Nieither the audience nor the actors know how the story will turn out. Each performance
is filled with unexpected plot twists, creative characters and the magic only found in live theatre.
In addition to watching the “play” unfold, audience members may participate in the production by playing
necessary props, characters and even scenery, as they experience this interactive improv performance. The
talented ensemble of Reggi’s Paper Slip Theatre invites the audience to a performance that is pure spontane-
ous theatre, while reinforcing teamwork, listening skills and school-appropriate messages.
This program is suitable for young audiences of all ages.
MaDCO: EXERCisE iMAgiNATiON
FRidAY JanUarY 20
“Exercise Imagination” is designed for interaction between audience members and MADCO artists.
MADCO will show off excerpts of its athletic, entertaining and architecturally stunning dances and
share behind the scenes tidbits about how artists get their inspiration and what it takes to turn
an idea into a dance. Everyone will get their creative juices flowing and work together to create a
new dance for the company with special roles for the audience. Who knows? You may even see your
creation on the Touhill stage someday! This program is suitable for elementary school students.
MUnY 4U
FRidAY aPrIl 13
Muny 4U is an hour-long theatrical experience, designed by The Muny with the middle-school
audience in mind. Interactive and lively, the show will involve the audience in different aspects of
musical theatre, and demonstrate that they know more about the genre than they might realize. Pull-
ing from different sources, Muny 4U will highlight the integration of musical theatre into popular
culture. The grand finale will involve the whole audience in an impromptu flash-mob-style produc-
tion. This program is suitable for middle-school age students.

Bill writes about English Country Dance…..Whereas most modern activities demand age-, gender- or skill-dependent prerequistes, English Country Dance provides a meaningful and fun way for "children of all ages" to interact as a community while making their own entertainment. As an art form ECD is easy enough for anybody to do (if you can walk, you are well on your way to proficiency), yet it provides just enough of a challenge so that everybody comes away with a deep sense of community satisfaction at having corporately built something of beauty and old-fashioned wholesome fun. The music and laughter alone are reason enough to explore the possibilities! If you are interested, stay tuned for more info or contact the McDonalds at:

9) AIMS (Adventures in Medicine and Science) classes for the 2011-2012 school year from Kerrie Tate

Hi Everyone! I have been getting MANY calls and emails about AIMS (Adventures in Medicine and Science) classes for the 2011-2012 school year. There were a few delays in finalizing the classes because of construction at Young Hall. We now have the final schedule for the SHARE-sponsored AIMS Auditorium

Presentations and Dissection Labs – SEE BELOW. Sorry to all of you Tuesday Homelink students – we didn’t get much choice about class days because of construction issues! For those of you that haven’t heard about the awesome AIMS Program…..it is an outreach of the Practical Anatomy and Surgical Education Department of Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine and has been offered to area students since 1991. The AIMS teaching staff of science professors and physicians present a variety of human anatomy enrichment classes for jr. high and high school students (mature 5th & 6th graders count as jr. high). The Auditorium Presentations and

Hands-On Dissection Programs are wonderful supplement to ANY jr. high or high school science and/or health curriculum. A student does not have to be considering the medical profession or a science degree to benefit from the classes – they are for anyone that wants to learn more about the human body and how to keep it healthy (and who doesn’t?!).   All classes take place in SLU’s Paul A. Young Hall at 3839 Lindell Blvd., St. Louis MO 63108. Auditorium Presentations are $5 and Dissection Labs are $15. Parent Chaperones are free, but must sign up ahead of time. To sign up for one of the AIMS Auditorium Presentations and/or Dissection Labs, go to the Public Page of the SHARE website at www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share/ and click on the “Public Calendar” link on the left sidebar at the bottom. When the calendar appears, click on the date/class you’re interested in. A pop-up window will appear on the left side of your screen. Fill out the required information and your name will be added to the sign-up list. Your seat will be guaranteed when your payment is received.

You must sign up individually for each AIMS class, even if they are on the same day.  Mail your check (made payable to SHARE) to Kerrie Tate, 617 Bacon Ave., St. Louis MO 63119. You can write one check for all classes, but be sure to make a notation in the memo section of the check. Please put “AIMS” on the outside of the envelope. You can also drop off your payments to Kerrie at Homelink, support group meetings, field trips, etc.  If you are interested in any of the classes, don’t wait to sign up – they fill up quickly (especially the Dissection Labs that have a limit of 50 students). Also – we must give AIMS our exact count at least one week before each program. Since we usually have a waiting list, SHARE can give a refund if you cancel before the class day and we fill your spot. For more details about this event, go to the “AIMS Program 2011-2012” link on the left sidebar of the SHARE website. Scroll over to the “AIMS PROGRAM IMPORTANT INFORMATION” webpage. Feel free to call or email Kerrie at 314-791-0000 or kertatefieldtrip@aol.com with any questions about this event. 12) TeenPact Missouri 2012 from Sarah Greek

Dear friends,
Registration for the 2012 TeenPact Missouri state class is now open!
This year TeenPact will hold dynamic, hands-on government and leadership classes in 38 states. We are excited about the opportunity to help students become active citizens and grow stronger in their walk with God.  Our mission is to train youth to understand the political process, value their liberty, defend their Christian faith, and engage the culture. Missouri's TeenPact class will be held March 5-8, 2012 in Jefferson City, Missouri. A Political Communication Workshop (optional) will follow on March 9.
TeenPact is a comprehensive leadership experience that brings teens closer to Jesus Christ, makes them better leaders, and positions them to impact public policy in their state. During the week, students meet important officials, interact with other like-minded students, and have more fun at the Capitol than they could have imagined. Teenagers go home inspired and challenged with an intensive desire to change America for Christ!
Our students also leave TeenPact with a clearer understanding of government than most college graduates. There is no better way for high school students to earn their high school civics credit! Please consider sharing this opportunity with the young people in your life.

Students enjoy worship & devotions and meet important officials, interview lobbyists, view campaign disclosures, improve their public speaking skills, write their own bills, and conduct their own TeenPact legislature. They analyze public policy from a Biblical worldview and learn to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Other activities include:
    •    Reading actual bills that are being worked through the legislature
    •    Researching how political candidates spend their campaign money
    •    Analyzing media content with an emphasis on worldview
    •    Participating in student elections
    •    Learning about the structure and content of our nation’s Constitution
What about children under 13?
The TeenPact One Day Class is an abbreviated version of the Four Day, designed specifically for ages 8-12. This class focuses on
    •    The biblical responsibility to pray for our leaders
    •    The principle of “higher authority”
    •    The “bill-to-law” legislative process
    •    Public speaking for young students
Date: March 9, 2012

14) Rallystar Tennis Academy Classes Accepting Students

Hello,
My name is Steve Hatfalvi and I am the director of RALLYSTAR TENNIS ACADEMY
in St. Louis. We are proud to be celebrating our 30th year teaching the great game of
tennis. The sport of a lifetime. Our head instructor trained at the world class level with
the most successful men's coach in tennis history, Gloria Connors. We teach a simple
yet powerful biomechanically sound approach to the game and start children at the age
of three as opposed to other programs that wait longer in the child's development. This
past year we were able to assemble an advanced class of 3 year olds and decided to
concentrate on the pre-school student as well as older children because of this remarkable
success. We teach both children and adults and have a special program developed for
families at a discounted rate.
The RALLYSTAR program is unprecedented in its dedicated approach to successfully
teaching the game of tennis. The technique is so advanced and the learning curve so
accelerated that we guarantee results in the first session of four lessons or we give a free
lesson to bring the student up to speed. RALLYSTAR TENNIS ACADEMY students
are accustomed to learning the game skillfully enough within the first lesson to be
playing tennis within that first lesson. Our rates are reasonable and private instruction
is also available. The lessons are conducted year round at local courts and held indoors
during the winter months at Vetta Sports Complex just minutes from downtown Webster
Groves. Class size is limited to 4 students so that doubles skills can be mastered.
We also design the class size for the all important 4:1 ratio to alleviate the common
boredom associated with most large parks programs that run a boot camp to maximize
profits. RALLYSTAR conducts men's, ladies', mixed group, and corporate sessions
for all skill levels and has the endorsement of Wilson Racquet Sports to test the latest
equipment available to all students. Please contact us anytime to discuss a custom
program for your school or organization. Excellent references are available. Family rates
for private instruction are 44.00 per hour and group private lessons are 20.00 per hour
for each student. Sessions are scheduled 7 days a week with morning, afternoon, and
evening times available. Each session is a 4 week program and cancellation for a lesson
is required within 24 hours to receive a no-charge, one-time 30 minute makeup which we
offer to each student for their particular session. See you on the courts.
Best Regards,
Steve Hatfalvi

15) Fox Performing Arts St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase Competition 2012

2ND ANNUAL ST. LOUIS TEEN TALENT SHOWCASE COMPETITION ANNOUNCES CALL FOR ENTRIES
STUDENTS MAY ENTER DIRECTLY THIS YEAR.  THERE WILL BE NO PRELIMINARY COMPETITIONS FOR ADVANCEMENT TO FINALS.

St. Louis/October 4, 2011 – Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation (FPACF) is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase Competition in Spring of 2012.  Registration to participate is now open for all senior high school students in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.  The event will follow a competition format with students vying for scholarships, prizes and the opportunity to compete in the finals on the Fabulous Fox Theatre stage on Friday, April 27, 2012.  This event will truly showcase the most talented teens in our region who excel in the performing arts. The 1st Teen Talent Showcase, which received tremendous response from the community, took place on May 6, 2011 before a sold-out crowd at the Fox Theatre.
In September 2011, more than 180 senior high schools and performing arts organizations received in the mail details about the 2nd Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase Competition including a December 1, 2011 “Call for Entries” deadline.  This year’s Showcase Competition has changed its’ registration process.  Students no longer register through their schools.  This year students and/or student groups are required to register themselves to participate. “This allows more than one student or student act from each school which will open the competition up for more students to participate,” said Mary Strauss, President of FPACF and event producer.  All contestants must be enrolled in the 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade in the 2011-2012 school year and must attend a high school/home school in a 50-mile radius from the Arch.  The preliminary round will be held on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday March 11, 2012.  Acts may include up to six students performing as a group.  “We want students to think creatively and enter in any performance art they feel passionate about,” said Strauss.  Students may enter in, but are not limited to, any of the following categories: singer, dancer, actor, musician, comedian, circus skill artist.
Finalists in 2011, the 1st Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Showcase Competition, included an aerialist, singing groups, soloists, dancers, a spoken word artist, and baton twirlers. Micah Manaitai, from Crossroads College Prep, who performed “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on an electric ukulele, was awarded the 1st Place college scholarship prize of $5,000.
- more   -
Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation/add one
Three preliminary round locations for Saturday, March 10 and Sunday March 11, 2012 have been arranged: St. Louis Community College/Forest Park, UMSL’s J.C. Penney Conference Center and Lindenwood University’s Belleville campus in Illinois. A fourth location will be added if necessary.  De Smet Jesuit High School will host the semi-final round on Saturday, March 31.
Senior high school students can respond to the “Call For Entries” and register on-line at www.foxpacf.org or new this year – on Facebook – “like” Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation and find the complete guidelines for the competition.
Each round and location will have a panel of at least three judges who will adjudicate and advance acts to the next round of competition.  The finalists will compete on the Fox stage as part of a professionally produced show on Friday, April 27, 2012.  Judges for the finals will represent both St. Louis and national arts professionals.
Students placing First, Second and Third will win college scholarships. The top 25 contestants will be eligible for various prizes, yet to be announced.  Finalists will also be provided unique performance opportunities within the St. Louis area arranged by the Foundation. In 2011 finalists performed at the Muny Lichtenstein Plaza, Six Flags St. Louis, Webster Groves Art & Air Festival, Shakespeare Festival St. Louis, Dancing in the Street and First Night St. Louis.
“We were thrilled with the response to our first competition from both the schools and the community.  Providing this opportunity for the students to perform at the Fox and on other stages around St. Louis again this year was really an easy decision” said Strauss.
Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation fosters and promotes the performing arts in the St. Louis Metropolitan area, encouraging audiences of all ages and from all walks of life to experience the joy and wonder of live performance.

11) Free Teen Writing Workshop
Hi there,
My name is Teri Eddy and I co-organize the new St. Charles Secular Homeschoolers support group (http://www.scshs.com). I recently met with a local author that is holding a FREE teen writing workshop sponsored by Barnes and Noble during Teen Read Week at the McClay Library in St. Charles and subsequent events in St. Louis county as well.
In the interest of cooperatively sharing resources and events with all homeschooling families in the area, I was hoping that you could pass along the info to your membership.
Her name is Angela Sage Larsen. She is very interested in becoming a writing/literature resource for homeschool groups in the area and has offered to explore the idea of doing classes/book clubs/writing workshops for writers of all ages. She writes children's and young adult fiction. Her YA books, Fifties Chix, emphasize strong female role models. I was treated to a spoiler for her Travel To Tomorrow book and I can say that if I had a young teen/tween girl, I would love for her to pick this up and read it. Her books are rich with the potential to incorporate academic lessons to our children on nature, science, history, art, and character education.
She has also written the Petalwink series for younger readers about the adventures of a fairy named Petalwink. Very cute! They were also illustrated by Angela herself. The artwork is amazing!
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=digital-text&field-author=Angela+Sage+Larsen
I've set up an event on Facebook, for those that have accounts, to ask the author more specific questions and to RSVP:
https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=214653551921938
         ****************************************
Fifties Chix: Travel to Tomorrow in association with Teen Read Week, sponsored by the American Library Association.
“Being true to your own inner voice & creating strong characters” Teen writing workshop for ages 13-19 In a world full of vampires, wizards & zombies, improve your writing by creating rich characters that carry your story. Whether or not your characters are mythic figures, they need to be fully developed and real in order to support your plot and be relatable to your reader. In this entertaining and informative workshop, get the seven golden keys that unlock your talent in creating dynamic, believable characters and get must-have writing tips from published YA author, Angela Sage Larsen.
There will be another event the following day, Monday somewhere in STL West County time and place TBD. These events will be sponsored by Barnes & Noble (book signing after the workshop) and 1 if not both held at libraries (read: free event!!).
    *****************************************
Thanks for your time. If you need more info about our new group, feel free to contact me. If you have questions about this event, the facebook event page will give you access to the author, Angela Larsen, directly. If you do not have access to facebook and wish to contact Angela, I can put you in touch with her.

15) Fall Home School Days at the Creation Museum
Summer is almost over, and I'm sure your Homeschool classes will soon be back in full swing.  One of the best ways to reinforce what you are teaching in the home (in Science, History, Bible, and more) is to take a trip to the Creation Museum (located in the Greater Cincinnati area).
The Creation Museum presents a unique and unparalleled experience, a walk through time portraying significant, life-altering events from the past, illuminating the effects of biblical history on our present and future world.  Be prepared to experience history in a completely unprecedented way.  Our state-of-the-art exhibits, Stargazer's planetarium, life-sized dinosaur animatronics and beautiful outdoor gardens with paved walking trails and petting zoo make this an exciting addition to every homeschool curriculum.
For the months of September and October (Sept. 1 - Oct. 27), the Creation Museum will be running special pricing just for Homeschool families.
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday's are Homeschool Days. Admission to the Museum is only $12 for adults (13 and up) and $8 for children (5-12).  The Stargazer's Planetarium is also specially priced at only $5.
To take advantage of this special Homeschool offer, please present the PDF you can access here: http://tinyurl.com/3g7jbsp at the Creation Museum on the day of your visit.  This pricing is ONLY available with the PDF coupon.
As a special bonus, when your admission tickets are printed, they will be coded with the word "BLUE."  Simply present your tickets in Noah's Cafe or the Dragon Hall Bookstore to receive a 5% discount on all purchases.  The ticket must be presented at the time of purchase.

The hills outside of Marthasville literally come alive with the sights and sounds of the 1800's.  The early German immigrant's functional lifestyle is authentically recreated as juried artisans, in period attire, demonstrate natural dyeing, German fractur, sad ironing, koppolei, wood turning, hide tanning, candle dipping, and rug the hills outside of Marthasville literally come alive with the sights and sounds of the 1800's.  The early German immigrant's functional lifestyle is authentically recreated as juried artisans, in period attire, demonstrate natural dyeing, German fractur, sad ironing, koppolei, wood turning, hide tanning, candle dipping, and rug braiding — just a handful of the eighty primitive skills exhibiting the early German life and trades.

Period music, whistling steam, wood smoke and the sweet fragrance of cooking sorghum fill the crisp, autumn breeze.  While watching elite craftspeople, you can savor German home cooking and try your hand at stuffing sausage!  A dated antique sorghum press driven by Missouri mules and a steam-powered sawmill complete the historic walk into Missouri's German yesteryear.

29) World Food Day Commemoration at the Danforth Center

Our World Food Day Commemoration at the Danforth Center is returning for a second year, and it's going to be even bigger and better than last year.

What is World Food Day at the Center? On October 14-15, the Center is opening up its doors and enlisting thousands of volunteers to package nutritious rice/soy protein meals for people facing critical food shortages in sub-Saharan Africa. Much of the Danforth Center's scientific research involves finding long-term solutions to the scourge of hunger and malnutrition in this developing part of the world.
We chose to commemorate World Food Day – a day marking the founding of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization – by increasing awareness and understanding of the challenge of global malnutrition and encouraging informed, year-round action to alleviate hunger through scientific and humanitarian efforts.
