Band Instrumental Music Instruction

Beginning through Advanced band instruction is being offered to home schoolers through
the Lutheran High School Association Elementary Band Program. The instruction takes
place twice a week in coordination with the existing programs in the Lutheran schools.
Several locations and schedules are available. Individualized instruction is provided in
a group setting. Students progress at their own rate but also participate in group playing
and performing. Students who are at least10 years old by Aug. 1st are welcome in the
program. Younger students could be accepted with administration permission. No
experience in necessary. Students with prior band instrumental experience will be worked
into the program at the appropriate level. For information email Steve Tirmenstein at

Group performs and various local and national historical events. For students between the ages of 10 and 18, and still attending school. 60% of the group are homeschoolers. Both the fife and drum are taught for free.
Maryville Symphony Orchestra

Rehearsals are on Monday nights from 7 - 9pm in Auditorium Building room 1423 at Maryville University. There is no fee to join the orchestra. We perform two concerts per year. This is a community orchestra made up of students and adults that reside in the St. Louis area. Members of the Laclede Quartet are principals of the string sections. There are several homeschoolers that participate.
The Maryville Symphony Orchestra strives to provide serious music to the community, to encourage interest in hearing and participating in serious music, and to offer a professional environment for performing that music for both amateurs and professionals. The MSO's goals are to increase the visibility of the orchestra, to establish a sound financial and administrative structure, and to extend its educational activities in the classroom and throughout the community.

The orchestra is open to students, faculty, and staff of MBU, but also to the general community--especially the homeschool community. Because this is primarily a collegiate group, it is expected that musicians who wish to play with the string ensemble be comfortable playing advanced literature; musicians may be asked to play an informal audition for the director before joining. High school aged students are certainly encouraged to play, and, depending on ability, middle school-aged students may also be considered.

The St. Charles County Youth Orchestra (SCCYO) is a not-for-profit organization. The orchestra, founded in April of 1996, is open to public, private, and home-schooled students across St. Charles County and the surrounding region. Currently, approximately 100 young musicians, grades two through twelve, are members. There are three separate ensembles, grouped by instrument, age and skill level. The ensembles consist of the Symphony Orchestra, Cadenza Orchestra, and Primo Strings. Placement is by audition.

The Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra has had a significant impact on the region's student musicians for more than 30 years. The Youth Orchestra consists of nearly 100 talented young performers, ranging in age from 12 to 22. The group rehearses weekly during the school year and presents three programs each season in Powell Symphony Hall under the leadership of Scott Parkman, the Symphony's Assistant Conductor. Other educational programs include lectures, festivals, demonstrations, free summer Concerts in the Park, Kinder Konzerts, Young Peoples Concerts, and Young Adult's Concerts.
