2) Speech and Debate Camp - from Beth Unger
Speech and Debate Camp is going to be offered by the team at ETHOS! The day camp will be held August 1 - 5 at Chesterfield Presbyterian Church. The leaders will facilitate sessions for all students; those who have never been exposed to public speaking, all the way to debate teams who have competed in national debate tournaments.
There has been a great demand for an Ethos camp to come to Saint Louis. Final details will be available next week - I wanted to let parents circle the date on the calendar.
Blessings,
Beth Unger

3) Adopting a Homeschool Family from Joplin - from Cathy Mullins
Dear Homeschoolers in St. Louis and surrounding areas,
Below is a letter that I have sent to all the SHARE members. I thought that maybe many of you would like to contribute also to help this homeschooling family get their lives back together. Thanks so much!
Cathy Mullins
June 23, 2011
Dear SHARE members, I've been in contact with Al and Sheryl Schmidt, FHE (Families for Home Education) Regional directors in the southwest part of the state (region VI). They have asked if we would be willing to "adopt" a homeschool family who has been hit pretty hard by the tornado and I immediately said "yes", knowing that you all would be happy to help them. I'll be sending out e-mails about their needs periodically and you all can pray and see how the Lord would lead you to give. I know that many of you are already helping through your churches or other organizations, but I thought it might be rewarding to actually be helping another homeschool family in an up close and personal way.
The Family
The family we will be helping are Preston and Sherry. They have 5 children. They are living with her parents along with a sibling and their family who also lost their home. (We have been asked that as a privacy issue we only use the parents first names, the children’s ages and gender, and no last names--I'm sure you understand.)
Apparently this family lost everything. It's interesting to see what special items the children are missing the most--it made me think of what I would miss the most if all my earthly possessions were suddenly gone. The following are some special items the children would appreciate:
Olive Garden
Braums
Del Rio
Pizza Hut
Quiznos
Culvers
McDonalds
Taco Bell
KFC
Subway
Carino's
Logan Steak House
Food For Less
Walmart
Price Cutters (Webb City)
Target (ours is one that has a small grocery area)
Also Visa Bank Cards -- preferably something they don't have to activate to work --
Curriculum:
For the most part, they are using use ACE (Accelerated Christian Education) and Math U See but Sheryl said she is checking on a couple of possiblilites of helping them in this area and will get back to me on the curriculum issue.
How to give:
You can either give check, cash or gift cards. If you give a check or cash, feel free to attach a note saying what particular item you would like the money to go to. I will do my best to get these children the items they want or at least provide them with the ability to purchase them for themselves. Send your offering to: Cathy Mullins 3675 Montana St. Louis, MO 63116
If you are sending a check, make it out to SHARE but put the words "Joplin Family" in the memo. (This helps me not to get them confused with other SHARE checks.)
As soon as I hear from Sheryl about their other needs (right now I don't think they have any where to put other items), I will be sending out an email letting you all know what those needs are. Many of you will only be able to give once, but many of you may be able to give something often. We will just let the Lord lead all of us in our giving. Please don't feel condemned if you cannot give at all or have already given and can't give again--God is in control of this and HE will make a way for all of their needs to be met--either through us or others.
If you have any questions at all, please let me know. You can always e-mail me at
Ekcjmullins@gmail.com or call me at 314-769-7965.
Thanks so much!
Cathy

2) Missouri History Museum Home School Days for 2011-2012
When we created Homeschool Days this year, we had no idea what we were starting! The past year has been filled with educational days that were fun for the whole family. We’re thrilled that the program has been so successful. In this e-newsletter we’d like to take a look back at this year’s Homeschool Days.
Plus, we’ve already scheduled our dates for next year! Mark your calendars for the following dates:
Monday, September 19, 2011
Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Monday, November 21, 2011
Monday, December 12, 2011
Monday, January 30, 2012
Monday, February 20, 2012
Wednesday, March 7, 2012
Monday, April 16, 2012
Monday, May 5, 2012
More details about the 2011–2012 school year will be released in late summer. As in the past, we request RSVPs from all who plan to attend so we can be sure to have enough activity materials and space for everyone.
We communicate about these programs primarily through email, so if you didn’t receive this message directly from us, please click here to be added to our mailing list. With more hands-on crafts, kids and curator opportunities, and even a partnership with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, you won’t want to miss out on next year’s programs!
Here’s a look back at the past year’s highlights:
SEPTEMBER 2010: NUMBERS AND NOISE
In September, we mixed music and math through our Numbers and Noise program. Students played with Boomwhacker percussion tubes and created pie charts that connected fractions to chords.
NOVEMBER 2010: WORLD'S FAIR
In November, we invited Nicole Thomas of Pinx Academy of Dance to lead an Olympic-inspired workout for everyone. We also created our own “postcards from the Fair” and sent them to people we cared about.
DECEMBER 2010: HOME LANDS
In December, we explored the Home Lands exhibit, took a yoga class with Miss Qiuju, and decorated gingerbread cookies. We also enjoyed horse-drawn carriage rides through Forest Park while sipping hot cocoa to keep warm.
JANUARY 2011: LINDBERGH
In January, we invited curator Sharon Smith to discuss her favorite treasure in MHM’s collection, starting the popular “Kids and Curator” series. Many families braved the wintry weather to see a special Theatre in the Museum performance as well.
FEBRUARY 2011: MOVEMENT IN BLACK AND WHITE
In February, we invited professional Afro-Caribbean dancer Kimberly Anderson to lead us in a dance workshop. We also welcomed poet MK Stallings to help us find our voices as we reflected on civil rights history.
MARCH 2011: SPLENDID HERITAGE
March brought a very popular Homeschool Day as we explored the Splendid Heritage exhibit together! Guided by curator Carolyn Gilman, we drew our own maps inspired by Indian and European traditions. We also met Mary Beth Jäger, a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, and learned about her family’s traditions.
APRIL 2011: CELEBRATING MISSOURI
In April, we celebrated Missouri traditions together. Caller Bob Green of Childgrove Country Dancers taught us square dancing, and fiddler Vesta Johnson offered a group fiddle lesson following her presentation about growing up in northern Missouri during the Great Depression.
MAY 2011: GATHERING BLUE
We took our inspiration from Lois Lowry’s book Gathering Blue for our Homeschool Day in May. The Weavers’ Guild of St. Louis offered demonstrations in the Museum’s Grand Hall, and author Katie Rodriguez Banister answered students’ questions about what it’s like to live with a disability. We also appreciated your students’ feedback on ways to make the Museum more accessible to all members of our community during a conversation with curator Sharon Smith.
SPECIAL THANKS TO MISS TABITHA!
Our Homeschool Days wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and planning of K–12 educational interpreter intern Tabitha Matthews. Whether it was thinking outside of the box to create unique activities, spending hours at the library to find the right books for storytime, or just making sure the days ran smoothly, she went above and beyond in dedication to homeschool students. So thanks, Miss Tabitha—we’ll miss you! Good luck next year!

7) ACT Prep Class
~~ this one comes highly recommended. Thanks! Cathy Mullins
The summer session of the ACT prep class taught by Homelink math teacher, Mike Farley, will begin on Thursday, July7, and there are a few openings remaining! (This is not a Homelink class.)
The 8-week course will meet on Thursdays from 12:30-2:00 pm, beginning July 7 and concluding on August 25. Classes will be held in the Fellowship Hall at Crossroads Presbyterian Fellowship, 2640 Oakview Terrace, Maplewood 63143. Payment in full of $175 per student is due at the first class. We will be using Barron's ACT, 16th edition, as the textbook for the course. Please purchase the book before the first class and bring it to each class session.
The course provides instruction for each of the four sections of the ACT exam: English, reading, mathematics, and science. Students will work through the drills and practice exercises in the Barron’s ACT textbook to learn in the basic principles covered by the ACT exam in each area. In addition to reviewing that basic knowledge, students will be taught the most common types and patterns of questions on the exam and helpful strategies for increasing speed and accuracy. Each section’s basic principles will be applied by working through at least a portion of a practice ACT exam.
Please contact Mike Farley at
mifarley@sbcglobal.netASAP if you are interested in enrolling your child in this class.

9) Strings Class at Bayless Baptist Church from Cathy Mullins
Dear Homeschoolers,
Announcing the new O’Connor string method at SHARE!
Information on the O’Connor Violin Method:
"I am pleased to introduce the O'Connor Violin Method for string teachers and students of the violin. This 10-Book series is designed to guide students gradually through the development of pedagogical and musical techniques necessary to become a proficient, well-rounded musician through a carefully planned succession of pieces. Gradual development of left-hand technique, bowing skill and ear training as revealed through the study of beautiful music encourages a love of music-making in a slow, steady and natural way.
The music that I have collected for the O'Connor Violin Method includes some of the most endearing melodies in American music as well as some of the great folk fiddle tunes that have endured our 400 year-old history of violin playing. I have made it a specific feature of the Method to include musical literature that represents all of the Americas -Mexico, Canada and every region of the United States – and all musical styles – classical, folk, Latin, jazz, rock and ragtime. I have chosen and arranged material that will be both instructive and artistically enriching, and will help create the future classical violinist, folk fiddler, jazz musician - or all three!
My travels of the past 30 years have convinced me that a new American Classical Music is evolving. I have encountered thousands of students of all ages and abilities at concerts, workshops, college/ conservatory/university seminars and fiddle camps and have found repeatedly that students do not want to be "left out" of the great sounds and energy of fiddling and jazz because they wish to become fine classical players. It is my firm belief that the new American Classical Music will embrace the totality of our rich history of violin playing, and it is my sincere hope that my Method will further this process and perpetuate love for the violin." -- MarkO'Connor (New York City, 2009)
More Info on OCM:
The O'Connor Method employs classic violin technique and theory to teach students to become skilled violinists. But more than that, the O'Connor Method uses familiar traditional American music to engage and motivate the young student. The lavishly illustrated books focus on well known traditional American tunes such as Oh! Susanna, Amazing Grace, Appalachia Waltz and Soldier's Joy. The method seeks to instill a deep appreciation of America's musical history with background stories of all those that contributed to this rich heritage: Immigrants, African-American slaves, soldiers - all of whom together created what has become the new American Classical Music. A unique feature of this method is that through the progressive development of initially simple works, O'Connor demonstrates that there is more than one way to play a piece, adding an 'improvisational' twist not found in other methods. The goal of the O'Connor Method is that young people everywhere will fall in love with playing music. Currently volumes 1 and 2 of this 10 volume series are available. Included with each volume are CDs with MarkO'Connor playing all the tunes, plus piano accompaniment tracks.
Jamie Haubner’s bio:
JamieHaubner is a homeschool mother of seven, and grandmother of two. Her grown children have earned scholarships to college, including music scholarships. Jamie has been actively involved in a number of home school organizations: she directed a multi-family home school co-op in Utah, has taught at the Utah Home Education Association summer convention, and has taught classes in various homeschool settings.
Jamie and her children have participated in a number of music organizations across the country: Suzuki studios and Intermountain Suzuki String Institute in Utah, Young Musicians of Virginia (a large Christian homeschool organization in Virginia Beach), and most-recently in the the Suzuki program located at SIUE in Edwardsville, IL. Jamie has played violin and viola alongside her children in these organizations; in the SIUE Suzuki string program she has taught music and movement, note reading, and viola classes at Saturday classes, workshops, and summer camps.
Jamie participates actively in church music as well. She has served for years as the music director in the children’s program at her church, and has conducted choirs of all ages. She currently has responsibility for the music in her congregation, plays the organ, and is an assistant conductor for the Rising Generation Youth Chorus (an auditioned church choir of high school students in the Saint Louis area). She teaches piano and organ to a dozen-plus young people in her congregation.
Jamie has completed certification in the Kodály method (a folk-song-based approach to musical education). She has spent countless hours observing gifted Suzuki teachers, and has completed some Suzuki teacher training. She recently completed training for books one and two in the O’Connor string method, and will complete training for book three this summer, at the first-ever O’Connor string camp, in Charleston, SC.
Price: $20 per student per month, with students providing their own instrument and book. I'd love to invite interested parents to participate, too. An important aspect of our family's musical journey is that we have walked it together, and I hope to encourage other families in that sometimes-difficult but very rewarding journey!
Time: Leaning towards Monday at Bayless Baptist Church, but not set in stone.
If you are interested in this class and would like to send a comment to Jamie, please do so. You can contact her at jamie.lee.haubner@juno.com

11) Youth Hunter Education Challenge
The Youth Hunter Education Challenge programs have typically consisted of 15 – 40 participants during the daylong event. Our first homeschool event in Missouri on May 7th 2011 drew 69 participants. Many of those attending were first time shooters.
Our Youth Hunter Education Challenge is usually conducted as a daylong event. We have 8 categories, 4 shooting and 4 responsibility categories. The shooting categories are rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader and archery. The responsibility categories are a hunter safety trail, wildlife ID, orienteering and a hunter safety exam. A new, local event is only required to have 1 shooting and 1 responsibility event to be fully funded by the NRA. At this time, we are supplying all of the materials needed to conduct an event. We even provide staff to help set up and facilitate.
If you would like to check us out online, go to www.nrahq.org/hunting/yhec . (You may read on our website that state hunter ed certification is required for participation. That is not true for these new events we are starting) Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I would also love to hear from support group leaders around the state. My region includes the 8 states that border Missouri plus Missouri. I would appreciate any other contact information you might have throughout this Mid-America region.
Please let me know if I can assist homeschoolers in starting new Youth Hunter Education Challenge programs in our area.

13) NASA Final Shuttle Launch - Educational Programs and Contests
This message has been sent to share information about an exciting art integration education program related to the NASA Space Shuttle's final launch scheduled for July 2011.
As a homeschool father myself, I believe it could easily supplement or complement homeschool art/science activities.
Because It Flew (BIF) is a free innovative educational program that introduces students grades 4-12 (ages 9-17) to the impact of the NASA Space Shuttle Program on our planet and people. It is designed as an engaging and informative project that commemorates the 30-year history of the Shuttle program and its scientific and technological contributions to society.
Resources and activities were developed with support of NASA by NIA in partnership with USA TODAY Education.
I believe BIF might be of interest to you and your state's home schoolers for several reasons:
- BIF integrates STEM and language arts in a way that engages students.
- BIF offers cash awards, a remote mentoring session with a graphic artist, and certificates.
- BIF could easily be adapted to group and individual homeschool settings thereby serving as an engaging end-of-year, summer, or conference/camp project.
I have attached an invitation from Carmen Futrell, an art teacher from Virginia Beach, Virginia. In the invitation, Carmen describes the educational benefits of BIF participation.
BIF consists of two elements: 1) optional educational activities and 2) NASA Space Shuttle Art Competition.
Educational Activities
Four interesting, unique activities engage and introduce students to the history of NASA Space Shuttle missions. They may also guide students through the process of creating an entry for the NASA Space Shuttle Art Competition. Download the activities (pdf) directly from the website: www.usatodayeducate.com/becauseitflew.
NASA Space Shuttle Art Competition
Students are invited to create original artwork that symbolizes the impact of the NASA Space Shuttle Program on our planet and people. They will also write a 250-word essay explaining their artistic entries. An expert panel of artists will review submissions. See www.usatodayeducate.com/becauseitflew for more competition details, including rules, entry and consent forms.
Submission deadline: August 5, 2011.
Next Steps
Is there some way you could assist in spreading the word about this unique competition to your membership and homeschool students?
I have attached a flyer for your convenience. I've also included a web banner (leader board) if that would be more appropriate (small skyscraper and square sizes are also available). It could be placed on a website with a click-through to the competition website.
If you distribute the information, could you please send me a note with scope and date of outreach for my records because BIF is an approved NASA program.
Thanks for your assistance. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

16) Daniel Boone Home Activities for Summer
Dear Homeschoolers,
We are hot and heavy into the summer camp final design and we would really appreciate assistance in getting the word out to folks. I will send an agenda along as soon as we get it finalized. We are going to have the oldest group actually focus on a couple of projects here at the site ... so they will learn the skills and then actually do some work that will be a part of the site.
If scouts are interested some of these activities might fulfill merit badge requirements. We would have to have a leader review the skills and let us know where they might fit in.
If you have questions or anyone would like more information they can contact me or Amanda by email or by phone. Otherwise, please go to our website to find out lots of information about our upcoming events of:
June 13-17: The Colonel's Company
June 20-24: Boone's Trailblazers Camp
June 27-30: Boone's Trackers Camp

1) Algebra I Class Offered in West County from Jeannine Floyd
My friend Bob Johnson, a former high school math teacher, is offering an Algebra
I class in West County starting in the fall. Bob is currently tutoring my son
Garrett in Algebra II. Math has always been a challenge for us. We have tried
many curriculums, and finally, we feel that this has been successful.
I've asked Bob to give some details about him and the course. He writes:
About me: I received a Missouri teacher’s certificate for secondary mathematics
and taught high school math in public and private schools for 6 years. I also
worked for two years as a tutor and test prep instructor before starting my own
tutoring/test prep business in 2009. I help students with their math classes
and their ACT and SAT prep. On my website, www.BobJohnsonTutoring.com, you can
learn more about me and read comments from students, parents, and other
educators that I’ve worked with. My wife, Jill, and I homeschool our children,
who are 10 and 7. Jill and I also lead the children’s ministry at our church.
About the curriculum: From talking with Jeannine, it sounds like most of you
have questions about this. I looked at Algebra 1 books by Saxon, ABeka,
McDougall Littell, Prentice Hall, Scott Foresman, and Glencoe/McGraw Hill. I’ve
settled on the 2004 edition of the Prentice Hall Algebra 1 book, which you can
buy used on Amazon.com for about $30 to $45. (If you buy, be sure to get the
2004 edition—it is different and better than the newer editions that are now
out.) I won’t get into the reasons why I rejected the others (feel free to ask,
though), but here are some of the reasons I selected the 2004 Prentice Hall
book:
* The first couple of chapters set a very solid foundation for the rest of this
course and for higher level math courses. Important terms and concepts are
well-defined and presented in a logical order. This is crucial.
* There are plenty of examples worked out with clear step-by-step
instructions. There are plenty of relevant, high quality graphics. In short,
it is user-friendly.
* There are plenty of exercises available in each section for as much practice
as each student needs. There are also plenty of review exercises available.
* The content, terminology, and problem-solving approaches are well-suited for
the ACT and the SAT, as well as for higher level math classes.
* There are some really neat online aides made for this book, such as extra
practice quizzes and tests, and video tutorials. These online resources are
FREE, and can be found at
http://www.phschool.com/webcodes10/index.cfm?area=view&wcprefix=aek&wcsuffix=0099.
This link also outlines the titles of each chapter in the textbook.
About the class: We will meet twice a week (possibly Tuesdays and Fridays) for
90 minutes each day, with a small break halfway through the 90 minutes. I’m not
sure how many students will eventually sign up, but I’ll limit the class to no
more than 15 students, so that no one gets “lost in the crowd.” This will be a
32 week class (16 weeks each semester), and the cost will be $600 for the
year per student. I will require the students to take notes, I’ll assign
homework after almost every class, and we will have tests and quizzes. I’ll be
responsible for teaching all of the content, but as much as possible, I would
encourage you to be involved in observing your child complete their homework
assignments, so that you can stay “in the loop” regarding what they are
learning. Generally speaking, I’ll start each class by taking questions about
the previous class’ homework assignment. Then, for new topics, I’ll explain and
demonstrate each topic, and I’ll give the students an opportunity to practice on
their own. I like to be very interactive, so I’ll ask a lot of questions as I
teach, to make sure that the students are “getting it” each step of the way, and
I encourage the students to ask plenty of questions themselves. I will vary my
approaches and methods to account for the variety of learning styles, and I will
deviate from my daily “agenda” whenever it becomes apparent that the students
need more or less time on a topic than I had previously predicted. I have
requested a room at a facility in Ballwin/Ellisville area and am waiting
confirmation for Tues and Fri. for the hours of 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.
Grades: I will prepare and grade the tests and quizzes, and give you the
results, and let you decide what to do with that information. Even though I
will answer questions about the homework, I do not plan on doing a “homework
check” for a grade. (This will save valuable classroom time.) Instead, I
would like the parents to do the homework check. You would be checking for
completion, not necessarily for accuracy. I’ll let each parent decide how to
weigh the test/quiz results with homework completion, attendance, etc., so the
parent will be responsible for the quarter/semester grades that go on the
student’s transcript.
Readiness: Generally speaking, students can take this Algebra 1 class if they
have satisfactorily completed a solid middle-school pre-algebra course. I plan
on making up my own assessment soon to give to each prospective student. This
would not really be an “entrance exam,” but rather, a tool to help me get a
general idea of the strengths, weaknesses, and knowledge base of each student.
This will help me structure the class more specifically to the needs of the
participants.
Feel free to call (314-646-9548) or email (Bob@BobJohnsonTutoring.com) with any
questions, comments, or concerns.

3) DaySpring Enrichment Classes '11/12
To all our Homeschool friends.....
I know that many of you are familiar with DaySpring. Some of you have attended our performances, participated in either our Musical Theatre Program or maybe taken Dance or Art with us.
We are acquainted with several of you from our Enrichment classes specifically for homeschoolers. However, many of you are surprised to find out that we offer a special educational option known as a University Model School, known to some of you as the Academy at DaySpring, or the Core Program.
Imagine being able to get the benefits of an excellent Christian school and the parental involvement of homeschooling all in one educational option-the best of both worlds as the saying goes. If you know someone who has considered homeschooling, but is apprehensive about their ability to do it, this could be the answer for them. DaySpring chooses the curriculum, does all the scheduling and planning taking all those pressures off the parents. Students then spend two days a week in the classroom with a teacher and peers and three days at home doing school with their parents. This option gives parents the opportunity to be directly involved in their child’s education, while utilizing the expertise and support of an experienced educator.
We at DaySpring want to help make home school education a positive experience for both students and parents. Our teachers are not only caring compassionate Christians, but they are experts in their area of education. We are here to create an environment where students are free to love learning, challenged to do their best, and given space to grow.
There is much more information about our curriculum, educational philosophy, schedules and practical details on our website at www.dayspringarts.org and now is still a great time for new families to come visit and meet with us to see if it is a good fit for them.
If you know anyone who would benefit from this program that DaySpring offers, please pass this email on to them.

5) ACT Prep Class from Cathy Mullins
Homelink math teacher, Mike Farley, is offering another ACT prep course this summer. (This is not a Homelink class.)
Course format: The course provides instruction for each of the four sections of the ACT exam: English, reading, mathematics, and science.
Textbook: Barron’s ACT, 16th edition. The course will use the version of the 16th edition without the CD-ROM. Students should purchase the textbook on their own and bring it to class each week.
Course schedule, pricing, location: The course will run for 8 weeks, meeting once per week for 1 hour 30 minutes, for a total of 12 hours of instruction. Classes will begin the week of July 4 and conclude the week of August 22. Cost for the course is $175 per student, with a minimum of three students per class. Payment is due in full on or before the first class. Class will meet at Crossroads Presbyterian Fellowship, 2640 Oakview Terrace, Maplewood 63143. Class will meet from 12:30-2:00 pm on either Wednesdays or Thursdays.
If you are interested in this ACT course, please contact Mike Farley at mifarley@sbcglobal.net. In your response, please indicate (1) which day(s) of the week you are able to attend and (2) which day you would prefer (if any).

Below is the information for our three English Country Dancing Summer Sessions. These are fund-raisers for the Robert Kee family and the Heart to Hart Fund, so all dances will be called by volunteers. The cost is whatever each person chooses to contribute. So, put the second Friday of June (the 10th), July (the 8th), and August (the 12th) on your schedule to come and dance with us, and bring your friends!
We're making up the dance list now, and are still taking requests.
Also, if you'd like to help by calling a dance or two, do let us know!!!

Sports are a lot of fun. We get good exercise, learn to work together towards a common goal, and meet new friends. However, the Patriette Lights believe that sports should not be the most important thing in our lives. Our Heavenly Father should come first with others being second and then somewhere in that important list comes our schoolwork – above our sports. Because of this we have designed an attendance policy that allows the players to put other things above sports on occasion.
Each player will be given five “passes” that can be used throughout the season to be excused from a volleyball event without penalty if the athletic director is notified in advance.
Acceptable reasons to use a pass might be:
Sick with fever
Out of town with the family
Big church event
Choir performance
Another teams’ tryout
Close family member or friend in the hospital
Very behind on schoolwork
ACT/SAT testing
Etc.
Unacceptable reasons might be:
I forgot.
I didn’t read my e-mail.
I felt like seeing my boyfriend.
I was tired.
I couldn’t find a ride.
I didn’t feel like it.
I had practice for another sports team.
I had to work.
It is our hope that this type of policy will allow our players the ability to set some priorities and still be involved in other activities.
If you have any questions please call Patty at 314-566-3667 or e-mail at 10yagers@att.net.

4) Thank You from Cathy Mullins RE: SHARE Prom
Dear Parents of Teens who came to the SHARE Prom,
On behalf of Pat Zink, prom coordinator, and all the chaperones, we want to thank you for having very well-behaved children!!!! The prom was a delight for us to chaperone. Your children acted maturely and also displayed an attitude of gratitude--a number of them came up to me and personally and thanked me for making the prom happen. Pat Zink said that she experienced the same thing. Also, we did not have to approach any of the dancers for inappropriate behavior!! I think this is wonderful considering we had approximately 200 participants from all over the bi-state area!!!
As you know, we do choose a Senior King and Qeen and a Junior Prince and Princess, who receive crowns and congratulations. These names are simply chosen out of a hat! I am happy to announce that the recipients of these honors were:
Junior Prince: Geddy Avery
Junior Princess: Kelli Clark
Senior King: Anthony Dulay
Senior Queen: Naomi Elson
It was nice that Anthony's and Naomi's names were picked out because they were on the Prom Committee and put in many, many hours of hard work in planning and decorating--I guess the Lord knew!
The decorations were gorgeous and the music was loud--just like a prom should be!
Once again, congrats to your children for making this another successful prom and we look forward to next year (Pat Zink said she would do it again--hooray!)
Blessings!

8) Diploma Information from HSLDA for Upcoming Graduates - from Scott Woodruff
The following information was issued by Scott Woodruff of HSLDA:
MISSOURI
Who Should Issue the Diploma?
A member recently sent us statements from a homeschool organization’s newsletter that raised several questions in her mind about who should formally issue a homeschool student's diploma.
The St. Louis-based organization’s February 2 newsletter said:
“Don’t be caught unawares and unprotected! Last year a newly graduated panic-stricken homeschooler called [the organization] because the university to which she had applied would not accept her diploma because it was not through [the organization] .... They wanted verification from the [organization] leaders that she had indeed been a part of [the organization] and had graduated with [the organization]. Unfortunately, we could not validate either....”
The organization’s March 3 newsletter followed up with:
“[The organization] is proud to recognize students who have completed their studies through the issuance of a diploma. The presentation of a [organization] issued diploma provides students and parents with the confidence that their hard work will be recognized and relied upon by others.”
Based on our experience, the warnings in the newsletter excerpts are misplaced. With over 80,000 members nationwide, HSLDA has observed that diplomas issued and signed by parents are the norm in the homeschool community. They are accepted by employers, universities, and the military, virtually without exception.
Homeschool organizations are tremendously helpful in maintaining the vibrancy of the homeschool community. And it is a blessing when they offer graduation ceremonies that make a student’s journey past this momentous milepost in life memorable and joyful.
But with or without a ceremony, I recommend that the diploma itself be signed by the person who would be in the best position to give clear and credible testimony—in the unlikely event that it is ever needed—about the student’s education and what he did to earn the diploma. This will often be you, the parent. Or it could be the registrar of an online program or private school that was the backbone of your student’s education.
A diploma is not merely “recognition” that a student has finished a high school program—a nice graduation gift would do that! It is a solemn, good faith statement of fact—from a person in a position to know—that the student finished the required work.
An important component of your freedom to homeschool is the freedom to issue a diploma to your own student—a diploma that will take him wherever he wants to go. HSLDA works every day to protect this freedom!
Remember that if you are a member of HSLDA, you have access to help from seasoned full-time attorneys who work exclusively on homeschool legal and related issues, as well as veteran homeschool moms on our staff who provide specialized help on high school issues, slow learner issues, special needs issues, etc.
Your freedom is our calling!

Here are some FAQs in regards to the Faire:
Q: What age group if the Faire designed for?
A: We have something for every member of the family. Younger children will enjoy the British Cartoons, make your own crown and armor, make presents for Mum, and most all of the athletic areas. Students will love the Knights Tournament and all the food. Older students are looking forward to Shrovetide and funny British humor like in the movie "Reduced Shakespeare Abridged". Several fathers are entering the Knights Tournament, so maybe you will be the one to win free tuition for you child at a Homelink class next year! Mums too!

A: Your activities and booth purchases are 50% cheaper if you use pre-purchased tickets. Food items cost the same regardless of what kind of ticket you use.

This is a WONDERFUL math, computer programming and robotics camp!! All 3 topics will be taught in each session. The computer programming and robotics are done individually on a self pace. A child being able to attend the all day session and even both weeks will greatly benefit because they'll be able to get further along on their projects. The math portion will be a combination of math puzzles, math games, logic problems, and practicing math contest questions as a great prep for future math contests. The material will not repeat, so a registration in both sessions both weeks will be very beneficial for a child.
If the student signs up for the AM and PM sessions, he can remain at IMACS during lunch (need to bring lunch as there are no vendor options).
If you have any questions about the camp or to register, feel free to contact Dr. Doug Hunt at 314-569-4184 or Caroline Meisel at 636-675-1101.
Thank you,
Caroline Sarian Meisel

8) Patriette Lights Coed Volleyball Summer Camp - from Patty Yaeger
Recent research has shown that young people who learn a lifetime sport are healthier later in life because they tend to keep up with that sport. Volleyball is considered to be a lifetime sport because it is so easily accessible at parties, people's backyards, churches, businesses, and there are so many leagues out there to play in.
This summer camp will be an excellent opportunity for beginners to learn the basic skills that will allow them to play successfully in recreational game. In addition, more advanced players will have a chance to warm up before their team tryouts.
There are only 15 days until the May 1st deadline to sign up!

We are very blessed to welcome christian home school dad, Jim Denner, as our Head Coach for the program. Jim coached men’s volleyball at Lindbergh High School for 8 years and women’s volleyball for 3 years. He currently plays competitive volleyball on several different leagues in the area. Wednesday, June 8th
1:30 -4:30 pm
$10 per person - Located at C4
(The fee is to help pay for court time)
12691 Conway Road, Near the Northwest corner of 270 and 40
Below is a proposed summer tournament schedule. It includes 4 tournaments, 3 in St. Louis and 1 in Hannibal. Unfortunately, most scheduled tournaments include Sunday play. Only the tournament in Hannibal is for Friday/Saturday, the 3 in St. Louis include Sunday games. The total cost of the 4 tournaments is $880, so the cost per player would depend upon the number of girls who sign up to play.
At this point, I am only intending to have a varsity team, but if enough younger girls are interested, we can reconsider including a younger team. Player slots are available for all girls who intend to play for the Patriettes during the 2011-2012 season.
Schedule is as follows:
5/7/11 - 5/8/11 2nd Annual Battle of the Borders (St. Louis)
6/10/11 - 6/11/11 Hannibal LaGrange College Shoot Out (Hannibal)
7/8/11 - 7/10/11 MAYB - St. Louis III (St. Louis)
7/22/11 - 7/24/11 MAYB - St. Louis IV (St. Louis)
We would probably practice 2 nights the week before each tournament.
If you are interested in playing, let us know as soon as possible. You can email me of these email addresses, sportsmomx4@linuxmail.org, gary.brehe@veoliaes.com, or call me at home, 636-239-1272.
We will discuss this further at the Awards Banquet Saturday night.

9) More information on HB 467 From Gary Brehe
Due to the communications of last week, I believe there is confusion in the homeschool community concerning the future of homeschool sports and different proposed legislation to remediate some of the concerns. I understand everyone's concern about these issues, and MSHSAA's reluctance to positively engage us in any meaningful dialogue to alleviate the issues. At this point, I and many others have moved past attempting to further engage MSHSAA, and are seeking a legislative resolution to the issues. There are actually two issues currently being discussed, one concerns homeschool students playing on MSHSAA member school teams and the other is for homeschool teams to be able to play MSHSAA member school teams. While the issues are certainly related, there are enough differences to require seperate consideration. A discuusion of both issues and what is being proposed follows:
Homeschooled students playing on MSHSAA member school teams - The issue here is that homeschooled students cannot participate on MSHSAA member teams or in individual sport competitions unless they are enrolled in the member school for at least 5 hours per day, or basically a full time student. This is a significant issue for students in rural areas where homeschool teams are not available, or in sports where homeschool sports are not available such as golf, wrestling, etc. In essence, these homeschooled students are forced to enroll in the member schools, or give up the sport they love to play. This is an older issue which has seen some action in the past, but MSHSAA has managed to sidestep control on this issue. The current proposed legislation (HB476 & Senate Bill 67) addresses athletic competitions for individuals on MSHSAA member teams, but the comprehensive issue also applies to other nonathletic competitions such as bands, choirs, etc. As the bills are currently written, they would allow homeschooled students to participate on MSHSAA member athletic teams and other athletic competitions for their geographic location as long as they meet the age requirements. There is some concern among the homeschool community that this could give the public school community some inroads to attempt to regulate the homeschool community's freedom to educate our children. While this is always a risk with anything we do, I personally believe the benefit gained for many students outweighs the inherent risks of increased controls/regulations. We will need to be constantly vigilent to any proposed regulations and rely on our current group of legislators and the FHE (Kerry Messer) to keep us apprised of any issues.
Homeschool teams playing MSHSAA member school teams - This issue is different in that MSHSAA currently does not allow its member school teams to play homeschool sports teams. They have created a third class of school teams called MSHSAA affiliated schools who are able to play member school teams and are allowed to play homeschool teams. As more schools attain MSHSAA member status, this decreases the number of schools that homeschool teams are able to schedule, and since affiliated schools have been granted the ability to play member schools, it also has decreased their need to schedule homeschool teams. This is resulting in a real scheduling nightmare for the existing homeschool teams. It is forcing us to curtail our game schedules, to travel further, and increasing our costs. The homeschool Lighthouse Academy in Springfield tried to work with MSHSAA and met the original set of guidelines they were sent, received MSHSAA affiliated status for the 2009-2010 season, only to have it revoked in midseason because they did not meet some MSHSAA bylaws. What we are requesting already is available to the Kansas City teams, which have incorporated in Kansas (even though the team members are primarily from Missouri) and because KSHSAA recognizes homeschool teams and has a reciprocal agreement with Missouri, they can play MSHSAA member teams where other homeschool teams in Missouri cannot. To resolve this issue, we have discussed with various House members to amend or change the language in the House Bill 476 to force MSHSAA to allow its member teams to schedule homeschool teams.
I hope this clears up the confusion that exists and clarifies why we need legislative action on these matters as soon as possible.
The next question then, is what can I do to support this effort? We need you to write or email your representative and senator urging them to support the addition of an amendment or language change to the current bills to include remediation of the Team issue (So Homeschool Teams can play MSHSAA Member Teams) and urging them to act upon this legislation in the current session. If additional language can be inserted to protect against any increasing regulation of the homeschool community in the first issue that would also be welcome. Others you can contact who would be instrumental in bringing this to a vote in this legislative session are:
Steve Tilley - Speaker of the House - email: steven.tilley@house.mo.gov
Tim Jones - House Majority Leader - email: tim.jones@house.mo.gov
Scott Dieckhaus - House Chairman of the Education Committee - email: scott.dieckhaus@house.mo.gov
David Pierce - Senate Chairman of the Education Committee - email: david.pierce@senate.mo.gov
Brian Nieves - Senate Education Committee Member - email: brian.nieves@senate.mo.gov
General form for email addresses for House members is (all lower case):

5) 4-H BEGINNING HORSEMANSHIP CLINICS
Team Miller and the National 4-H Horse Bowl team are offering a ten hour, week long course, to introduce new riders to the basic techniques and theory involved in caring for, training, and riding horses. During this course, students will have the opportunity to groom, lead and ride a horse. They will be taught basic safety in both working on the ground with their horse and when mounted. They will be introduced to theory which will cover horse anatomy, parts of tack, and basic management practices. Students will also learn exercises which will prepare them to ride with a balanced seat.
Each session will be limited to 18 students, age eight and over. These students will be divided into three groups so that each student gets a maximum amount of personalized instruction. These groups will rotate through a ground station, theory station and riding station at each meeting. Upon completion of the course students should be able to safely lead, groom, mount, dismount, and control their horse while riding in an arena. They will also be familiar with the parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle, and have a basic understanding of the management practices involved in owning and caring for a horse.
Students will be enrolled in 4-H as a part of participating in the course, which will enable them to access any of the 4-H materials needed to continue their study in horsemanship. Our family enjoys participating in the many programs that 4-H offers, and we use their materials to supplement our home school curriculum. We are hoping that by providing these clinics we can introduce your children to the joy of working with horses and encourage more families to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities 4-H offers.
Our farm is located off Highway 30 near Cedar Hill, Missouri. We are about an hour from the intersection of Manchester Rd. and Clarkson.
Our next clinic runs Monday, April 25th, through Friday April 29th
Cost: $85.00 (20% discount for siblings.)
Choose from either Session A or Session B below:
Session A: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

8) METRO THEATER COMPANY: THE RED ANIMAL
Metro Theater Company invites you to join us for a staged reading of a brand new play that will premiere at the Missouri History Museum in January 2012! This thrilling new play by Melissa Cooper brings the past forward in a story set in a remote military outpost in a faraway country, where five young soldiers confront the defining experience of their lives. Loosely inspired by Stephen Crane’s novel, The Red Badge of Courage, this contemporary story is gripping, funny, and richly poetic. The Red Animal provides a rich platform for discussion about how the past informs the present.
The staged reading will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 2. One of the goals is to get audience feedback, so please plan to stay for a discussion after the play. Please note the location is not the Missouri History Museum; rather, it’ll be held at Central Reform Congregation at Waterman Blvd. and Kingshighway in the Central West End. It’s free and open to the public ($5 suggested donation). All we ask is that you RSVP by April 28 to rsvp@metrotheatercompany.org

13) Showing of the Kings Speech at the Hi-Pointe - from Cathy Mullins
Dear Homeschoolers,
Here's great news from SHARE mom, Jo McDonald!!!!
:) Cathy Mullins
Jo writes......
THE KING’S SPEECH is an amazing film based on an important aspect of recent history. It is both extremely accurate and entertaining.
Because of some offensive language, the original release was rated R. In an unusual move the studio has chosen to re-release the movie with a PG13 rating.
I’m assuming they have removed the coarse language since that is the only questionable part of the movie.
Because it is such an excellent historical film it may be of interest to your family with this new rating.
It opens at the Hi-Pointe, St. Louis’ finest theatre, Friday, April 1st. (it may not show every day and may not be there long, so check the Hi-Pointe Theatre website for details.)
Your attendance will tell the Hi-Pointe and the studios you appreciate their sensitivity to the issue of extreme language.
